BNE: 1/8" NPT Tap Request

Postby Lokiel » Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:42 pm

Does anyone have a 1/8" NPT tap I could borrow for a weekend?

I need to mount a PLX oil pressure sensor which has a 1/8" NPT fitting into a GREDDY oil filter relocation block:

Unfortunately the official GREDDY adapter for the plug (the gold one on the bottom) uses a 1/8" PTfitting and NOT a 1/8" NPT fitting so I can't just purchase the adapter - see http://www.frsport.com/Greddy-16400720-M18-Thread-1-8-NPT-Sensor-Gauge-Adapter_p_16528.html.

I plan to drill a hole into the existing gold aluminium plug and tap it with the 1/8" NPT tap so it shouldn't take long.

- Gladly willing to discuss payment in terms of alcoholic beverages if required.

Thanks sailaholic.

I read that some tapping kits throw in a 1/8" NPT (US National Pipe Taper) 27 tap (Kincrome do apparently) so I checked my metric kit (not a Kincrome) when I got home and it includes a 1/8" BSP (British Standard Pipe) 28 fitting for some reason - don't know what the logic of this is (ie. why throw in a random tap into a kit? Maybe it depends on the target audience, British vs US and is considered a commonly used thread?).

Yah, mine was part of a metric kit. Not too many metric tapered fittings though I guess.

How much is a new switch to suit?

I once tried to track down a bolt to plug a coolant temp sensor hole only to find some sensors about 80c each that solved my problem. Sometimes we spend so much time and effort trying to engineer a solution when there is an off the shelf solution available.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

enzed / pirtek might also be able to help.

^ FYI:

The sensor I need to add is an oil pressure sensor:

On it's own it costs US$50.99 from PLX (it's a Bosch sensor) and the associated PLX sensor module was designed/calibrated specifically for this sensor.

ie. It's not simply a matter of swapping in another cheap sensor unfortunately :(

sailaholic has confirmed he has a 1/8"-27 NPT tap in his metric tap&die set that he can lend me to tap the plug - this is one of the great things about this forum, members ARE willing to help each other out.
