Has anyone run a AFCNEO in NA8? or similar...?

Hey guys,
Can get my hands on and have been told by a couple of people to put a safc2 or afc neo into my na8
The car has intake, exhaust headers- couple of bolt ons...

Is it worth it? what power power gains should i expect if tuned correctly?

Thanks

Need more detail.

What intake? What bolt ons? What cost?

what bolt ons?

with the simple mods you have discribed, it will give very minimal gains. if you have cams or higher comp pistons, then it allow you to turn timing, fuel spark better tp compliment these mods.

If you just want to adjust AFR you might be able to use one of the Jaycar DFA units.

I've never used one, buy I've heard they do a good enough job to trim fuel as needed.
The main criticism I've read seems to be that they don't have a huge scope of adjustability for Turbos/massive cams/etc.

But for intake and exhaust it should do ok.

I've actually considered one, but I've read that they don't work on NBs :frown:

They give plenty of adjustability. Its just not closed loop, and its only 2D.

And they work on anything with a variable voltage signal, not a PWM signal.

Closed loop is during warmup isn't it? (ie: o2 sensor not yet warm, so ECU goes to default setting)
So normally that wouldn't really be a concern (for little things like intake/headers/mild cams)

Not sure what signal method the NB uses, just going off what I read.

As for relevance to the OP, would the DFA suit their needs?
I mean, the AFC has plenty more scope for adjusting than the DFA, but is it really worth it for just Intake adn exhaust?

ie:
MX5 with intake and headers lets say

Apexi AFC = ~$500 = tune to gain 5kw? = $167 per Kw
Jaycar DFA = ~$150 = Tune to gain 3kw? = $50 per Kw
(note, pulling power figures out my arse, correct me if they're way off)

I'm just thinking, is the AFC worth the extra cost, for extra adjustability, for something as minor as what the OP has?

So many replies!
The unit itself probably wont cost me anything....Just wondering if its worth fitting...

Ive got a full apexi 2-1/4 or 2-1/2 (unsure) exhaust including headers & high flow cat
Mania style intake about to go on
Its got a 42mm alloy rad (not that it will give me power gains)

Thats actually about it performance wise...

The one i can get is actually Apexi AFC NEO...

What you guys think?

Cheers

last I checked the AFC was pathetic compared to the DFA.

The DFA is the best signal modifier one could ask for.

Sarcasm?

I wasn't touting the DFA to be the best thing out there.
What I was basically getting at was "would the AFC give any benefit over the DFA in this situation"

It's all well and good to be able to adjust timing/spark/etc, but if all you need is to adjust fuel, is there any point spending the excess on the other parts?

Much like if I posted and said.
"My car has a K&N panel filter, should I get a megasquirt?"

Yes, I can get a megasquirt.... but is it worth spending whatever a megasquirt costs to gain bugger all power?

I dont really plan on spending money to get one... so the DFA is out of the question unless I sold the Apexi....
Just that i can get the AFC for almost nothing and I can get it tuned for nothing...

Wondering if its worth the effort....

Are they legal in Vic?

Cheers

No and No.

As for megasquirt, it is worth it. Its worth 10-15hp on a stock car.

Being free is handy to know when asking a is it worth it question!

If it and the tuning is free, why not. If it costs money probably not.

Yes, definitely worth the effort as it's costing next to nix and you have someone who knows how to tune it. Even if you decide not to rejig the fuel map, you can always have it as a cool display. Wiring is very simple so installation and removal is done with minimal hassle.

Can't comment on legality.

Power gains would be fairly minimal if your car is running fine.

I just found that 90% sure its illegal :(

Cant be bothered with the hassle for such a small power gain....

Cheeers again

From a Vic EPA perspective, if emissions tested it could be a problem as strictly speaking it would affect the ADR complied tune, but plenty of forumites running interceptors/ piggyback ECUs who declare them to their insurance companies.
