Hi guys, at my recent skid pan day I noticed a burning smell of rubber in the cabin.I went to check out the motor I found that my pulley is spitting out melted rubber. The melted rubber was spitting onto the bonnet, hoses and splash tray. I recently replaced the alternator belt a week before this started to happen.

Any ideas ? Is this a bad sign ?

It doesnt look like a new belIts looks like a pretty old one. Id bet it was slipping really hard, though strangely it must have been pretty quiet otherwise youd have known.

Yeah I had the alternator belt slipping before so this was the replacement, its new.

It only spat out at the skid pan day, but on short daily drives it doesn't.

The belt shown is the aircon/power steering belt. I dunno why if the water pump/alternator belt was replaced, that the ac/ps belt wasn't replaced at the same time??? The ac/ps belt (in the pic) has to come off to access the alt/wp belt.

It looks like a very old belt, and it has been stretched I guess when being removed for the other belt access, and been slipping and heating up excessively to flick chunks off it. Time for a new ac/ps belt also. Did you notice any loss in steering strength?

Or, instead of replacing the belt, someone has just tightened up the old one. Cos if you say that is the new alt/wp belt, I don't think it is new. It looks very old.

Thanks for that, I think I only shown the AC belt like you said. I didnt know it was preferred to change both ac and alt belt at the same time.

Looks like ill be getting a new AC belt. As for steering loss I have a non power steering model so I didnt feel any change.

Did you have the AC on all day at the skidpan? The extra resistence from the compressor probably had the belt slipping and heating up.

Its not that is it preferred to replace it. but if it has to come off to access the other belt. For $12 and no extra cost in labour, then doing both seems financially better.
