Few little problems.

Hey guy's I've recently picked up a MX5 its a 2002 and its done 38000k, the previous owner had cancer so it sat in his shed for 7 years. Any way. I am having some problems with it.
The cabin smells of petrol when i open it up, sits for a week or so at a time. and the last time i drove it after going through a right hand corner the engine started to die, as in wouldn't rev above 5000rpm, if you held your foot flat it would just sustain but not increase revs. now to me it seems like it wasn't getting enough fuel, it had half a tank of fuel in when this happened. it has done it twice now, haven't tested on left hand corner but. the problem seemed to have gone away once i got back into the car after being at a mates place for a while.
I'm thinking it could be the fuel filter? i'm in the middle of changing it, but yeah, wanted to know if there was any thing else i could look at? regarding fuel smell etc?
Cheers!

Fuel smell in the cab would indicate a hose has perished somewhere around the tank.
Pull the boot lining and hose guard in the boot (filler/passenger side) and check for leaks/cracks
Also have a look at the top of the tank where the fuel pump lines are.
There is a manual available here which might help

Also welcome to the forum and obsession
Quick introduction of your MX5 with photo's is good
Adding the area you live in your profile is also beneficial

Mazda's assembly line process was based on building the entire car around the fuel tank.

how much things cost is a very easy exercise- just visit or call Mazda, or Bursons, or sponsors or look on line etc. It really might be better getting a further diagnosis - petrol will certainly go stale and it makes sense that there could be blockages in the "system" including perhaps injectors? Smell of petrol certainly flags a risk. I think Manga is suggesting tank removal and what next is a stretch unless one has the knowledge.

Manga is NOT suggesting tank removal. Tank removal starts with dismantling most of your car.

yes not well phrased in my sentence- I certainly was not suggesting Manga was promoting tank removal. I do think caution is required.

Hi,
It may be that the tank has water in it caused by condensation and just sitting around with old fuel in it, add a cup full of Metho to the next couple of tanks of fuel ( the metho is Hygroscopic and will absorb any water and then burn off in normal running) then use a PULP with a cleaning agent, and keep an eye on the stuff that you have done already as you may get more residue.
Good luck.
Greg.
P.S. Dont forget to update your profile, help may be closer than you think.
