Two questions:

1. The collar that sits at the top of the boot, on the shifter...how do I remove that? Or do I just break it off?

2. I guess I might as well replace the bottom boot since just about everything is out already? Or are they much more durable?

Top collar will probably tear boot when you force it up, so yes, just break it (assuming your replacement boot came with the collar ring on or with the new boot).

My bottom boot was also broken, so I had to replace it, but if the top boot is worn, then the bottom won't be far away.

If you have already pulled it apart to replace either the upper or lower boot, might as well replace the other.
Guarantee that the one you don't replace will tear sooner rather than later and you will need to do the job again.

If you have a 5speed you should change the oil in the turret!
If you have a 6speed this is not required

When I installed my SSK, I squirted around it with WD40 and it slid off easily.

Sure enough, the lower boot is shredded!

Question now is...how do I remove the lower boot off the stick?

I really should have taken pics of it for a guide! I'll try and remember to do this in reverse when I get all the bits back in (short story...the driver for this is that my seats and the shifter and brake gaiters are out re-upholstering)

Cut it off. And yes, the new lower boot will slip on over that fat lever without splitting, just use some KY...seriously.

Larry, got the boots today and fitted them. And everyone else, all the tips were most helpful...can't believe it was that easy, haha!

I look forward to seeing the pics and eventually to see how Apu has progessed. Are your seats done already?

I was looking at a cheap suede gaiter/handbrake set on ebay here and would be interested in seeing yours, if you've taken pics.

Hope that you are well. Have you been to the HJT self-serve DIY workshop for this and other things? I hope to follow in your footsteps with this shift boot and the gaiter replacements.

I got home late...they had arrived...I jumped into the car and installed them. It's very easy!
