I have a complete JDM engine which is said to be a 1.6 BP.
Is there any way of telling, without stripping it down, if it is 1.6 BP or 1.8 BP

1.6 or B6 engine = B6...... engine #

1.8 or BP engine = BP...... engine #

A BP is a 1.8

B6 is a 1.6

The engine number will start with either BP or B6

So if the the engine # is B6 it's a 1.6 and if it's BP it's a 1.8?

The casting BP has no real meaning?

Correct - if BP is cast into the head it's also a BP, as a B6 head won't have BP cast into it as the official engine designations were B6 = 1.6 & BP = 1.8.

Another relatively easy way to tell is the B6 engine length is shorter than the BP, i.e. length of cam cover, or head, or block, or sump.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the BP was available as a 1.6. I'll have find where I saw it and link it here.

It's only wikipedia, so could be wrong

So is the engine out of a JDM NB6 a B6?

Yes.

Mazda made B series engines for many years from 87 odd to 2005/6 including the B1, a 1.1L single cam all the way to the bpze and turbo variants. if its 1.3L its a b3 if its 1.6 its a b6 if its 1.8 though, its a bp.

Its the same family, so cylinder bore spacing and crankcases all share virtually identical critical measurements, but theres no B6 thats also a BP.

this is a BP block in the pic. i believe the B6 engine number is located on the opposite side of the block.

My B6 is out of a Japanese NB.

Has solid lifters and the sensors and thermostat outlet are different, otherwise looks very similar between years in the long nose crank.

Engine number is on the oil filter side for B6 and obviously starts with B6xxxxxxxx

Indeed, it's wrong, at least in terms of most of the engine codes used. BP-4W was only used in 1998-2000 NB8A & 2004 NB8 SE. The following gives you a better idea, but overall there's still some inaccuracies & gaps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B_engine#BP
