Noise when changing gears

Hey guys,

Yesterday, my NA6 developed a leak from a heater hose (the one from the engine through the firewall). Today, I replaced the hose in question. However, upon taking it for a test drive to see if everything was ok, I noticed that there was a squeal-ish noise when changing between 1st, 2nd and 3rd at any speed (not at a complete stop though). The leak sprayed coolant mainly over the thing that the spark plug leads plug into at the back of the engine, and down onto the transmission housing. The noise is a squeal, sort of like I'd imagine a gone bearing would sound like.

Would this noise be due to coolant leaking into the transmission somehow, and should it go away by itself? It's fairly loud and I don't like driving my car when it's making noises that it shouldn't, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Kieren

Does it squeel as your moving the stick, or whenever the stick is between those gears.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. Mainly when moving the shifter into those gears, but it does squeal while in those gears with the clutch in too

Tought i'd chime in here and also say I've noticed mine doing a slight 'squeal' too between gear changes and also on some mild acceleration.

I also have a coolant leak at the back of my engine which I've only noticed after changing radiators (previous radiator leaked around it's core). I'll be sussing this one out later tonight once I get my 5 on a hoist.

Maybe the two things aren't related.
Due to the short duration of the squeal. I can't tell if it's in the cabin, if it's the speedo cable or something resonating in the engine bay.

It's not a loose belt is it?

I'll check for that tonight but it isn't a belt squeal noise, different type of sound but it is a similar pitch. It's similar to a ..um ...mouse squeak- but there aren't any nesting in my 5.

Does it make the noise with the engine off and you pump on the clutch pedal? My pedal squeaks but I just need to get in there and lube it up.

I might just pop in. I have a similar issue, but it's only present when the air-con is on, and not when it's off.
The belt which drives the AC is also used for the power steering.

Does yours only happen with the air-con on?

My air conditioning doesn't work.
However on my Lunch break today, I repaired the coolant leak- clamps to the heat box in the firewall were loose. Also noticed the heater boxes metal hose attachments where loose (could push them into the firewall very easily) so I pulled them out as much as I could as I inserted the coolant hose over the top of them and clamped them very tight.

I haven't noticed the squeak noise driving back to work- that said the exhaust is extremely boomy this afternoon and that may be masking the squeak. Will report back later if it's a goer.

Ok, success in isolating where the squeak i'm experiencing is but not able to fix it till next week.

The squeak sounds like its from the cabin, but the frequency and duration of it is so sudden/short that with only one person (me) it's not easy to isolate where it's from. The squeak is heard easily outside the car as well as in. (Louder outside)

In my example, its *definitely* coming from my aircon compressor OR belt. Prominent when tapping the accelerator at idle and getting a bit of load on the engine (ie, tapping it above 3000rpm). My belt is a little loose and as I tried to tighten the belt it ended up bending the tensioning bolt. GRR.

I will have to sus it out next week, am off to Melbourne this weekend for a bit of R&R and will report back when i've made more progress.

Hope this helps?

Hello All, has a solution been identified please? What is the cause to the noise with the aircon on
