worn synchros or slave

Hi,

I have a 91 NA with only 118K under the belt. It is crunching gears on the up and down change. So whilst I first though the synchros were worn, I'm now thinking that is unlikely given the klms and chance that all of them are worn.

So, would I be right in thinking about closely looking at the clutch slave as leaking and needing replacement, followed by changing gear box oil? or would this probably still be worn synchros?

Cheers,
Grant

its easy to look a tthe slave.

just pull the pass wheel off and you can see it from behind there. Peel back the rubber boot, and well its its wet its leaking. I replaced mine a few months ago..around the 105k km mark

Highly unlikely that all syncros have gone. 1st to 2nd should be the first to slow.

Probably either the master or slave cylinder seals. If they are fine then it may have the wrong grade of oil in the box.
With 105,000 on the clock you’re due for a gearbox and a diff change anyway. There’s plenty of threads on this site about what oil people consider is the best.

so if the clutch is completely disengaging drive when fully depressed there can still be a problem with the clutch's hydrualic system to cause shifting probs?

My gearbox crunches real bad when I go from 3rd back to 2nd too aggressively, I'm pretty sure its syncro's in mine and I have been quoted 1200-1800 to refurbish the gearbox, hope yours is the slave cyl.

you could try a double pump of your clutch.... if this improves it then do the clutch master and slave cylinder....

It really does also depend on how much you abuse your box....
