Baffled Sump?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the whole MX5 thing, and recently purchased a NB SE 2005. My question is about baffled sumps. I'm always scared to drive hard without a baffled sump. Both my previous cars had baffled sumps, and the way the MX5 corners (ie: harder than the DC2R and the Evo) i'm slightly worried about oil starvation on cornering.

So my question is, are the stock MX5 sumps baffled? Or is the SE one at least? If not... what do you guys do? Do Mazdaspeed etc make a baffled sump, or have you had a fabricator weld in a baffle for you?

Any guidence would be appreciated.

I don't think anyone has had a problem with oil serge or starvation.
The motor sport crowd in Melbourne recommend overfilling by about 250 to 500 ml for the track and keeping an eye on it during the day.
Some do and some don't.

Naturally if you never check the oil level, it can run dry and become expensive.

Both those cars are transaxle configurations, and can have oil starvation do to the lower part of the sumps being on the outside of the engine. and if turning the opposite way, oil does not flow to the lowest point.

MX5s being a regular configuration under the bonnet, does not suffer from the above issues anywhere near as much as your previous cars.

baffles are available if you do feel the need for one.

There is a horizontal baffle in the sump, which is the ideal configuration.

I believe the guys racing on slicks are using baffled sumps as they generate more oil surge with the extra GRIP. The horizontal tray fitted to the NB8B sump is a windage tray not a baffle as such. I'm pretty sure Daniel Deckers builds baffled sumps for his race engines. If you are worried about oil surge fit a pressure warning light (with a decent pressure threshold sensor) - if it flashes in hard cornering you need baffles stat! :D

i've seen pics of the deckers one on this forum and it looks nice, you can also buy an off the shelf maruha baffle and bolt it in. i beleive mania stock them.
