Wrong Bolt Removed on Gear Box; Result was expensive

Postby Techno » Fri Jan 07, 2011 12:16 pm

Thought I'd drop the car into the local servo a couple of days before Christmas to have the engine oil changed.

Easy job ... not a big deal says David the mechanic.

Later David called ... he had finished the oil change. He then said as he was inspecting the fluid levels in the gear box he had removed the bolt from the Driver's side of the gear box!!!! .... I knew what he was going to say next ..... BUGGER

So from a simple oil change it ended up with having to drop out the gearbox, open it up, reconnect the sliders and replace.

That's the bad news .... the good news is that the crack in the PPF was discovered and TIG'd, and I had a new clutch installed with no labour costs.

Got the car back on new year's eve. On new years day I got in for a spin ... as I drove it out there was a huge pool of pink oil on the concrete .... gearbox oil. As it turned out the leak was from the washer ... new washer, more oil in, and all is OK.

Lesson learned ..... don't trust your prized cars to "the local servo".
Regards

Yep, just a local "mechanic" working out of the workshop attached to the independant Station

So the "local mechanic" made a mistake, admitted it, and fixed it (presumably free of charge)? I'd call that excellent service, and he's learned something that he won't do again.

To sum it up:
He initially did more than you asked by checking the gearbox and diff oil.
He made a fairly common mistake and admitted it.
Found (and presumably fixed for free) a problem you weren't aware off (the PPF).
Fitted your replacement clutch for free
I'm guessing he also fixed the leaking washer for free

All done over the Christmas - New Year period.
And you wouldn't use him again because you don't trust him :!:

I'm with Matty, I would be very happy with that type of customer service from anyone let alone a local garage
