NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Hi guys,
I have an '89 Eunos Roadster with a Wolf 3D V4 and I've changed over to a throttle body + variable TPS from an automatic MX5. Well, I've physically fitted the throttle body and TPS but wiring it is turning into a nightmare!
Has anyone done this conversion before who can give me some tips? I've wired it up to the ECU as per the factory wiring diagrams and it still doesn't read right - the throttle reads as variable for the first 10% of throttle opening then jumps straight to WOT! Not sure if its a wiring or a Wolf issue... might be easier if there was some info on tuning Wolf 3D's on the net.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Andreas.

I found the info on miataturbo.net to be quite useful.

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Thanks for that Jerrah, I had it wired up as described in the first post on that page and it gave me the same result I'm getting now.
I have my suspicions that maybe the TPS isn't so good!
Don't suppose you have a link to a pinout of an auto TPS? It came without any wiring so I have no idea which colour wires go to which pin

Green/black No1 top
red No2
Light green No3
Empty No4
Now if its anything a microtech or haltech you will need to
calibrate the variable TPS on your laptop.
If TPS is fu$*ed I purchased mine from Rockauto USA for $45 plus postage. The list is easy to use and the price is about $300 cheaper than Aust, and its a genuine part!!!!!

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Thats exactly what I was looking for Terry! Thanks! Considering Mazda Aus has 1 auto TPS left and want $400 for it, Rockauto is a godsend
Unfortunately had to waste last night Christmas shopping so I will try re wiring the TPS with my new found knowledge tonight and hopefully it will all work out.
Will update from the garage...

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
I used a BMW TPS on my NA6 and it would bolt up fine too, just in case you get stuck.

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
It does sound like it could be a calibration issue. Do you know what change in voltage the TPS has across the movement?

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Soooo.... I wired up the TPS as per Terry's instructions and no result. I decided to tidy up the harness (I was just pushing the terminals onto the TPS seperately before but wired up the plug and tail properly now) and connected the terminals as I thought they should go and it worked! For about 5 minutes.
When adjusting the TPS angle on the manifold I unbolted it from the manifold then put it back on (didn't touch the wires) and now it just reads wide open throttle continuously
I ran the multi meter over the wires and they do the below:
Red: nothing
Black: Earth
Green: Gives a variable resistance between it and the black wire as the throttle opens (but no voltage)
A lil puzzled as the Wolf needs a signal that ranges between 0-5v from the TPS to calculate throttle opening but none of the original wires leading to/from the TPS are 5v?
I'm sure I'm missing something really basic here... this thing is kinda doing my head in, wish Santa was an auto electrician.
Appreciate all the help guys!

Hi Terry,
Tested the wires from the ecu and none of them have any voltage... :s
Running out of options here!
Cheers,

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Hey Andreas,
Certainly turning out to being a PITA but we'll sort it out.
Is this hardwired or plug and play.
Can you tell me exactly the model etc of the case and I'll have a look at the wiring diagram.
It may take a couple of days as I can't concentrate for very long without getting crook and I don't want that thanks
but the brain needs to be kept working.

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
This most certainly is a PITA - not what I had in mind for Christmas eve...
The ecu is a plug n play unit, the top says W3D42561 and there is a sticker on the side that reads Wolf 3D Mazda MX5 Rev6.
Really hoping its not stuffed!
Will have to send you a case of beer when its up and running

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Wolf wiring pin 15 Red/dark blue to mazda pin 2L light green/ white =+5volt
wolf wiring pin 14 Dark green/dark blue to mazda pin 1N Red =12 volt with throttle open
pin 13 Black earth to mazda pin 2B or 2A black= earth
Now if this was working before with the on/off type switch it was probably wired up differently to above,, so would be worth while just rechecking and make sure it as above.
If no avail, let me know and me will rethink. You HAVE calibrated the TPS in the program???? and followed exactly as per instructions.

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Terry & Andreas,
Not sure if this will help as it was for the the Wolf3DV4+ on an NA8, but Boyracer advised me if a TPS signal was not present to connect red/black from TPS to blue/red by swapping the position of the wires at the wiring loom ECU plug. Lou advised that on the NA8 at least you could do this because the blue/red did nothing. So for the NA8 on the 13 pin wiring loom ECU plug you switch the blue/red at bottom row position five from the left, to top row position seven from the left, where the red/black is, & then place the red/black into the now vacant bottom row position five.
Btw, expect you already know this, but the Wolf's built in MAP needs to be used as opposed to the NA6 AFM or NA8 MAF.
Good luck & Merry Christmas!

Re: NA6 Variable TPS Dramas
Hey Terry, I've tested the two pins you specified at the ecu and I'm getting nothing from either. Hope I'm not up for a new computer!
Anyways, no more tinkering until the 27th so have a merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all the help!
