hi guys

i've purchased a nb6 engine to slot into my na6. included in the sale was the loom and ecu, and maf.

i haven't had much luck with internet searches on the differences between the na6 and nb6 engine, what components are different / better, and what is the best way to do the swap. however it seems that the most common and simplest approach is just to use the na6 ecu and running gear (afm, cas etc) and swap it onto the nb6 engine.

i'd prefer to use the nb6 ecu and maf if possible. it seems like a more elegant solution. but maybe it's more trouble than it's worth? or should i just get a megasquirt..... ?

the other thing i'm wanting to do is chuck some cams in it. the nb6 has solid lifters and i'm not sure if most of the cams on the market (which are made for the na6 engine with hla's) are compatible. can someone help me out here? are they compatible or will i need to source some cams that are made specifically for the nb6... coz i'm not aware that any such cams exist

anyway, any help in pointing me in the right direction in regard to info on the nb6 engine would be appreciated. surely there's some forums or other sources of info on the interwebs somewhere that can answer some of my questions as to how i should proceed.

oh, one more thing. i'm curious about the flywheel. i've seen that mx5 plus sell na6 fly's that have been "lightened and balanced to NB6 specification". does this mean that the stock nb6 fly is already lighter than the na6 version? coz i was thinking of buying a lightweight flywheel, but if the nb6 one is already lighter then perhaps i need'nt bother.

Someone did post up weights of flywheels on here a little while ago. I still have the original lightened na6 flywheel that came with my car. Weighs 4.7kg's from memory. The one in the car now is a na8 flywheel lightened to 7.1 kg's. I prefer the heavier one with the turbo.

It would be nice to use all the NB6 stuff, but I suspect it will be a lot of work. Manga_Blue posted very useful responses to someone looking to put a NB8B VVT head, manifolds & ECU into an NA8: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=35757

Of course VVT & probably immobiliser won't apply as mentioned in Manga's reply, but I believe the NB6 ECU is OBDII, which in an OBDI car would mean changing wiring & sensors as well. Doable, but a lot of work, however there are forumites running NB8B motors in NAs.

Certainly there are specific aftermarket cams available for NA8 HLA & NB8 solid lifters, & my understanding is you need to use the appropriate one. That said, I've also not seen cams for an NB6, but may be the UK forums would be useful as they got the NB6. They would also probably be able to help with other stuff as it's probably a more common swap there.

i was hoping that someone out there would have a bit more specific info to share, or be able to point me in the right direction , oh well. this forum does seem to have gotten a lot quiter lately eh....

it was meant to be a very low budget swap so i'll probably just forget about cams etc for now and just keep it real simple and use the na6 ecu / afm etc. i think that means that the only parts i'd need to swap on the actual engine would be the alternator and cam angle sensor and everything else should be fine... i hope
