Re: Extractors on NB (or cheap power)
Hi Mark,
The experts say there's no need to replace the exhaust manifold on a NB as the factory part flows well and the $300 to $450 you'd spend on extractors will get you very little in the way of performance gains. However you definitely should consider a hi-flow stainless cat and 2 1/4 sports system, that will give you much better throttle response and mid range range power. I'm not sure where you are located (you should edit you profile to include your city or state so people can recommend a local business) but do a search on 'Town & Country' who are in Geelong, Vic, they make a custom hi-flow exhaust which many of us have which gives great results and sounds briliant.
Cheers,

Wait a sec...
The 1999-2000 standard header is a boat anchor and is good for nothing except melting down for scrap. It is cast out of solid iron, weighs a ton, and does not flow that well. Did they use something other than the cast iron POS over there in Australia? It could be even worse if you guys got the CA spec pre-cat manifold. That thing sucks about 10-15hp according to some.
2001+ cars got a newly redesigned tubular manifold that flows very well and is a popular modification for 1999-2000 cars looking to upgrade.
So I guess this also begs the question - is your NB a 99-00 or a 2001+?

In Aus we have hade the Tubular manifold on all mx5. the later 98-04 were the best flowing

Zossy we had cast manifolds on our NA's and extractors were a useful addition but all Aussie Nb's had the tubular manifold and we have done many dyno runs that show only a very small(typically about 1 RWKW) improvemnet so if you want ultimate power ok but not a cost effective increase.

And for a bit more info a steel high flow cat makes about 4RWKW difference on the dyno compared to the Mazda one so you would be better spending you $$ on one of those if you have an NB rather than headers. The same cat also picked up 4RWKW on a NA 1.6 fitted with a BBR turbo.

Cold Air Intake matched with above mentioned high flow cat/exhaust will prob net you about 7-9rwkw.
For anything more you'll need to start looking at head work, then cams, etc, and that wont fit into your 'cheap power' requirement..

Chris H's NB8B went from 72RWKW to 86 with a steel cat. and a Town and Country exhaust; Stevesports also had a better result from memory with the same exhaust and cat and a cheap CAI.
I wouldn'tbe happy with 7-9 RWKW gain and reckon you should be able to get at least 12 for around $1000.

Re: Extractors on NB (or cheap power)
So im looking at future projects i don't really have any money spend to spend currently but at the end of the year might have a bit.
i Thought the NB8B came standard with about 105KW?
ive got a pod filter and so thought i had about 110?
I was also told an exhaust would ruin all my torque and low even power unless i get a turbo?
and if im going to spend 3K wouldnt i just be better off buying like a SE turbo kit second hand?

Re: Extractors on NB (or cheap power)
depends, get a dyno read out, should be about 75-80kw at the rear wheels.
