Quad throttle/ITB

Postby Mr nanotech » Tue Oct 12, 2010 5:14 pm

Hey this is just a super quick post because I'm heading to work. No real detail outlined and I'll have to keep it short.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of running quads in an na6 and if the gain is worth it etc. I've heard it's not worth it unless you track the car regularly because you lose a lot of torque in favor of top end and you only gain in the higher ups. But that said I haven't found anything online suggesting for or against that and more to the point, what it's like on an na6 mx5.
I know they sound great but that's not what I'm interested in. I just want to know if it's worth doing or not and the costs involved etc. Seen a lot of threads on it but nothing suggesting what I'm asking. I know there are probs occasionally with repositioning brake lines and so on and actually promoting a vaccuum and what not.

So yeah I'll leave you guys to have your say. I'm only toying with the idea, right now I've just put a mania intake in but after finding a few things online I'm beginning to wonder if I've made the right decision.

Oh and no doubt someone will ask, car is street dríven at the moment but hoping turning it into track car in the not too distant future. Just looking for a car that I can drive on the road and track with mates.

keep an eye on what classes of racing you want to run in and mod your car around that if you want to be competative. quads will push you out of quiet afew :(
if you just want to build the car you've always wanted and race it where you can then go for it. ;)

as far as making the car gutless down low and only being good for high rpm use this isnt really true.. i used to think this way afew years ago but its really not quads that change that alone. its just most times you see them they are setup for this.
from what i understand what changes your motors torque curve is more so the inlet runner length and diameter, cam profile, exhuast setup. quads will merely give you buckets loads of throttle response and more potential power as the individual inlets (in most cases) will allow the flow of more air. if you get a set with a shorter inlet runner length, than standard and tappering to a smallish port size it may actually make more torque down low then the standard setup..

you really arnt going to be happy with them unless you spend the dollars and get some cams and an exhaust that are suited to the same rpm range.

^ This.

Quads need to be considered as part of a system, not as a single add on.

You'd obviously need an ECU to make them work at all, but if you didn't do any other changes the benefits would be minimal.

I investigated this a while back, and it also appears that most of your money will be spent in tuning. And tuning. And tuning. You can pick up a cheap set of quads quite easily, but it's in the set-up that you'll spend most of your time and money, from what I was advised.

I was also advised that if you get it right, you'll be very happy. But like most things, if the tuning isn't spot on, you'll be frustrated to no end.

Keep us updated if you do decide to go down this route though, as I'd love to see a build thread if you do.

The other factor is that it will be less powerful and harder to get road legal than installing a 1.8...

I have a ke70 as well as my na mx5. I’m running a set of black top 20v quads on a ae92 4age with a microtech computer. I honestly think it evens out the rev range all the way through. The power isn’t noticeable as you would think but put the boot into it and you soon realise because you tend to get a kick in the face rather quick  I would love to do this conversion on my mx5 but i haven’t found a company that does quads for the mazda B motors. Good luck i hope you do it. If you do it whoever tunes it make sure they don’t put the mixture of fuel too high as it lags the response real bad took me three different tuners to get it right on my ke but when it is done right oh just rev rev rev
Sometimes I wonder why i have different taste to others??? Then I realise its because Im not a sheep

Hi,

I have AE101 quads on my B6.

My set up is AE101 quads, technotoy velocity stacks, custom manifold (made from a B6 and AE101 manifold), Megasquirt PNP (with TP wired in)

I can confirm that set up is a pain, because you really cannot sensibly use just MAP on its own, so first up you will need to have TP wired up to the ECU that you are using to get them working correctly. MAP is just not stable enough and you would probably wreck your engine running MAP because the transition from little fuel to lots of fuel happens very quickly, so mix that in with the unstable MAP signal, your engine will find itself running lean and/or rich a lot. (that is my experience anyway)

From a performance perspective looking at a straight swap from the stock manifold - not really noticable. From a fuel perspective no more fuel is need at WOT than what was for the original manifold, which says something, however as was said earlier, I think the benefit will not come until I get cams and head mods. I am planning on building a new engine, so mine are just preparation for that. I wanted to get them running first, rather than bolting them to a new engine and trying to run the engine in and get the quads working all at once. Throttle response is improved, I would like to get it on the dyno to help answer some of these types of questions, but since I have them running okay, I am focusing my finances on a new engine, that will need to go on the dyno anyway.

The only manifold I have seen available for a B6 was from somewhere in asia (cannot find the link). But I have not found anyone who has actually bought one. My custom manifold is okay, but I probably should have taken a chance on the one from asia for the price, I could have always done some finishing work on it, if needed.
