Hello all,

Quick question about an NA6. Im interested in a MX5 which is forsale at the moment. Only issue i can tell is the 400,000km on it.

Questions are:

How long do they last with good (every 5000km) servicing?

If it goes pop how easy and cheap is it to source another NA6/8 motor.

Lastly, how easy is it to change a motor over with some help?

As for are there any other 5's forsale, this is the only one in my price range atm :(.

Help is appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Ash.

If well looked after the engine should last around 200-300,000 k's before it will need rings and bearings.
Replacement engines are easy, and relatively cheap to get.
Yes, but you'll need a whole day, at least with some help.
What's your price range? Reasonable ones can be found for $6-8 grand.
Check out the For Sale section on this forum and also go to your state's club site, as they often have member's cars up for sale.

Thanks for your reply Benny.

So it would be safe to say it needs some decent work done on it?

So it would be do-able within a weekend by someone who has never done this kinda thing before? With help of course.

My price range is aruod the $6-8k mark. Have seen a few but they all sold. The ones forsale at the moment are all aroud $9k.

If I was to do this how much should i budget for the swap? $1k?

Ill check out the state area for sure!

All cars wear out ( ie all bits and pieces) - 400K is big K's. Better to pay a little more for a better car. The old idea of buying a car which is a little down and needs a few repairs and you coming out in front is largely a myth. Changing engines, finding a good engine, and then finding the clutch is clagged or the geabox is dicky is a headache. Repairs go wrong- you have to have some knowledge- you need the right tools and the space and the time. If you cannot afford a better car maybe buy something else or wait a little longer.

Agreed on what's said above.

400,000 is a LOT of wear & tear. The car would be very tired by then. Not just the engine but think about other components too - for example pretty much all the bushings would be sh*t unless they'd been replaced already. Remember not only that many km's, but also 20 years old.

Yeah they are very good points you raise. Rushed into buying my carrent car which had a few issues, which sucked. I guess i just got a little excited :P. I had a chat with a mechanic mate at TAFE today about it and he basically said the same and that it would be too much of a pain. I guess ill just have to wait, but then i might not end up in an MX5 :P.

No one selling an MX5 at a decent price in SA soon? :)
