Is it possible to replace the uni joint on an NA8 driveshaft? A friend has a shagged one and was quoted a fortune for a replacement driveshaft from Mazda. Has anyone modified a shaft to take a replaceable joint? Anyone have a second hand driveshaft? :D

BD, couple of refs to na8 uni joint in the 1st & 6th posts of the following thread:

Doesn't sound as simple as just replacing the uni joint - sounds like a section of the driveshaft might be involved, hence the extra cost.

Yes, the driveshaft and uni joint are a complete unit on our cars - I'm just wondering if anyone has found a way to repair the uni joint without replacing the whole thing ($900 odd from mazda    ). I'm working on finding a second hand shaft, but surely there is a better way??

Get a new propshaft made up by an engineering firm with replaceable uni joints fitted. That's what I did.

Whatever you do, if you don't get a genuine Mazda one (new or used), make SURE they foam-fill it and get the balance PERFECT the first time, otherwise they'll probably be seeing you again.

Ask me how I know. :(

I had one made up with replaceable uni's(big ones apparently) and it cost $550 rather than the $940 Mazda wanted.

I had PDR is South Geelong do it but Gibson's in Newcastle come highly recommended.

I didn't realise that Mazda resorted to such dodgey spare parts design. Sounds like something BMW would do.
