Can I use this oil in my NA8 gearbox?

Postby deviant » Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:39 pm

Yeah yeah I know...another gearbox oil thread. I'm just looking for a bit of help interpreting the recommended oil grades and making sure I am using something okay for my gearbox.

I have got a bottle of Limslip 90 Extra heavy duty SAE 80W90, API GL-5/6.

The owners book has the below advice....does the oil I have meet / exceed those specifications?

I'm sure the Limslip can be used in a gearbox as I have used it in the past in a transaxle with a LSD but I have not been able to find any mention of this oil being used in an MX5 gearbox.

NO
Thats LSD oil for clutch type diffs, used in a gearbox will glaze up the syncros in no time flat.
Just go and buy some decent brand 75/90 manual transmission oil GL4/GL5 Max.

Believe it or not, you can use Auto trans oil especially if you have cold change problems.
