Assuming the NA steering wheel is not different to a normal steering wheel.

First step is to put the old wheel back onto the boss and tighten it down properly.
Second step is to put the nut back onto the steering column. Leave the nut clear of the boss by about 4-5 mm
Now sit in the car.
Grab the steering wheel in the 9 and 3 position.
Pull the wheel towards you and, at the same time, rock it from from side to side (i.e. pull on one side with more effort, then the other side).
It should pop free from the column, but stopped from smacking you in the face by the nut.
If it doesn't pop free, move your hands to the 12 to 6 position and try again.

As I said on JDMST, you can borrow my steering wheel puller. Or come over one arvo and we can get it off :)

the wheel needs to be on the boss kit for you to get the boss kit off.

Its needed for leaverage and basically to "rip it off".

loosen the bolt in the middle of the boss kit, but do not take it off. Then start pulling! the boss kit should eventually pop off, it will be hard the first time, as chances are it hasn't been pulled off before.

To the OP:
Have you sprayed some WD40 (or any other lubricant) on the spline for a while to seep through before you try pulling it off? That might help.

Mine was a bitch to get off, I had to use a puller in the end. Just make sure you leave the main nut on a few turns from the top, that way you wont get hit in the face by a flying bosskit when it lets go.

I had the same problem. The way I fixed it was, I took the plastic shroud off of the switch gear below the boss...this exposed an edge of the boss. I then got a solid hammer and started tapping this bottom edge of the boss while turning the wheel (to loosen it on all edges). Once it is loose, turn the wheel back to dead center, remove the last threads of the nut, and take wheel and boss off

DONT DO THIS!!!

If you accidentally hit the column, it can drop and you'll need to get it replaced. Also, hitting it from one side without an even force all the way around may damage it.

Seriously, if you can't pull it off *with ease* with the steering wheel, get a puller. It's like $15 and the boss will come off so easy you'll wonder why you flocked around with it in the first place.

(as others said, dont take the big bolt all the way off, otherwise you WILL smack yourself in the head.)

i should set this straight....it wasn't proper hits; it was little taps. I also had a puller, but it didn't do anything, on account of the nut being too far away from teh boss

also, how do you mean the steering column will drop?

by drop i mean collapse

from wikipedia
For safety reasons all modern cars feature a collapsible steering column (energy absorbing steering column) which will collapse in the event of a heavy frontal impact to avoid excessive injuries to the driver. Airbags are also generally fitted as standard. Non-collapsible steering columns fitted to older vehicles very often impaled drivers in frontal crashes, particularly when the steering box or rack was mounted in front of the front axle line, at the front of the crumple zone. This was particularly a problem on vehicles that had a rigid separate chassis frame, with no crumple zone. Most modern vehicle steering boxes/racks are mounted behind the front axle on the front bulkhead, at the rear of the front crumple zone.

basically a safety feature, but i'm pretty sure you will trigger it if you hit the column hard with a hammer. best not to risk it
