An urban myth.

Numerous Club dyno days proved there was no difference in rwkW between the two engines. Mazda was forced to change it's method of testing to comply with the European emission standard.

Generally this engine is getting around 78 – 80rwkW. Add a set of extractors, and exhaust system and after market tuneable ECU and you will increase this to around 100rwkW.

Turbo it with modified internals and an ECU and you can make up to 240rwkW at which stage the gearbox starts to break. Most run them at a safe 180rwkW to ensure some long levity.

In 2002 Mazda Australia released the SP turbo which ran the stock ECU. Dyno’d standard most put out around 128rwkW. The “T” piece mod that gained another 1psi added another 10 -12 rwkW for $5.

An urban myth.

More than 'urban' Charlie - there are recognised published sources still quoting 113kw V 107kw - good to hear about those dyno outcomes though.

Btw, add enlarged cold air intake to after market tuneable ECU, extractors, & exhaust system.
