Removed turbo, now I need to plug the oil return in the Sump

Postby Juffa » Thu Jan 21, 2010 9:34 pm

As per the subject, I have removed the turbo from my 5. I now have a nice round threaded hole in my sump where the oil return line used to be. Now, I could leave the return coupling in place and plug it somehow, or could I plug the hole...say with a matching threaded plug. Open to ideas here????

Why not look at replacing the sump with a standard one - then sell the tapped sump - alternatively, do a swap with whoever purchases your turbo kit.

my mechanic used a short bolt of the same thread, then sealed it with some sort of gunk. so far so good.

as far as suitable gunk goes, i imagine there are many things that'll work. from plain old silicon, some kind of gasket stuff, to jb weld or quiksteel.

PS i have some permatex gasket gunk that should do the job, if you want it (the packet says it's impervious to oil, petrol etc) . i also have quiksteel but that may be too much of a "permanent" solution :?

Thanks UA, but after spending most of my holdiays stripping of bits and putting back the original bits, the last thing I want to do is lift the motor to swap the sump.....I'm over it.

Hey Fatty, I was thinking the same thing...I know the hole and thread sizes, so I sould be able to find a plug. I have some Sellys Knead it, which is much like JB weld.

Places like motorsport connections sell blanking plugs that should solve your issue. Use a good rtv or something like stag on the threads to ensure it stays in place and stays sealed.

Why would you remove your turbo?

To me, that would be like cutting off your gonads so you would't have to shave as often!

Yes, can't disagree with you on that one.....lets just say Tweety is being back to standard for possible sale.

Got a threaded plug today for the princely price of $2.00 Perfect fit for the tapered hole. Used locktite to ensure it doesn't come loose.
