Did you replace the rubber gear shift boots?

Most of you would probably have cracked/ripped rubber boots around/under your gear shifter on your NA's.
I've just found mine ripped. I feel no heat or smell any smells coming through. They cost ~$80 to replace both of them which i think could better spent maintaining other parts of the car.
Is it worth replacing? What are your thoughts and experiences? Maybe there is something I am not aware of...

Oh yeah, if you know of any places to buy it cheaper from overseas I'm all ears. I've tried googling but when i type in gear and boots it always ends up with the leather shifter boot/gaiter, which is obviously not what im after. Is there another name for the part? I can't find anything in the manual about the part other than seeing it in the pictures.

mx5parts.co.uk might sell them...
As for not changing them, why not?! As you said, they're only $80!! They're there to keep dirt and sh!t out of your gearbox too. $80 vs $800 for a rebuilt gearbox - I know which I would choose.

They also improve the feel of the shift, just replace them.

they dont last very long i think i end up replacing mine around 80 k km..

I have had crunchy gear problems, awkward shifting, just never felt quite like everyone went on about.
Just this weekend i went out and bought both rubber gear boots, also replaced the nylon gear selector bush..
Also replaced the turrent oil in my NA6..
BEST 90 BUCKS I HAVE EVER SPENT!!!!!
Shifting is amazing now, so much tighter and more direct. Its just a incredibly more precise shift.. Everything feels 110% better!!
I would highly recommend changing your old torn and ripped boots

Do the bottom one at the minimum. You can improvise for the top one with something found at Bunnings.

Thanks madboy. That place seems to have nice prices! Anyone else purchased from them or know of another well priced place they would recommend? I think i will get the boots, now i just have to find the best price i can!

I have discovered in my NB the bottom one is ripped and gearchange is currently sh!t house i just have some questions regarding a NB 6 speed 1) i read you DONT have to top turret oil on a 6 speed is that correct? 2) whould it be bad if i top it with some oil? (same as ones used in the gearbox) Thanks

Correct, no oil in the turret in the 6 speed...
