So my cat has bitten the dust, it's rattling like a nutter... and I've lost a LOT of power...
Q.1. There's oviously something blocking the air-flow - is this likely to be blocking the flow INSIDE the cat or something has gone and got itself blocked in the pipe and/or muffler inside the rest of the exhaust somewhere?
Q.2. For my car (modified, about 90rwkw) - is there going to be much power difference between std and high-flow cat?

In answer to Q.2, a quality hi-flow cat (preferable stainless) will make a noticable difference but even more so when paired with a matching hi-flow muffler. Town & Country Exhausts in Geelong are the experts in this field and can supply you with a system tuned purely for MX5's.
I have one of their systems on my NB8A and it made a huge difference to the car, both power and throttle response. Sounds pretty great too

Alfadog, two NB8B's same exhaust from the catback(T&C) one with standard cat the other with high flow stainles cat and a real cheapy CAI;Result(from memory) a gain of around 9rwkw.Same dyno, same day.
The car with the standard cat picked up about 8rwkw from it's previous result with the standard system on.
Obviously there can be a difference between standard cars that could contribute some of the difference but it is pretty conclusive.
Steel cats are better than ceramic according to our dyno results.
