Identifying part: Rubber 'bit' above engine oil drain plug

Whilst the girl was up on stilts today I thought I'd take the chance to have a good look at where my oil leak is coming from.

I've identified it as possibly being from above the drain plug from a black rectangular rubber 'thing', that looks pretty much just stuck on there. I've noticed this is starting to peel away, and when I had a peek inside it looked like some rubber piping going into the engine. No oil above that, so I'd say this is the culprit.

Only thing... I've had a look through the workshop manual etc. etc. and can't identify what the hell it was. Any ideas oh brains trust of cartalk?

I took some photos whilst out there and will try and get them up soon.

Bam! Used someone else's computer and the image is up.

Forgive me if i am being a little quick to jump in...

But its not by any chance the Rubber boot off the Clutch slave cylinder?? And perhaps your slave is leaking, quite a common problem..

Hmm... perhaps you're right? Did have the famous second gear crunch a few times a while back.

I'll investigate on this further. Ta!

Unfortunately the only copy of the image I have is too large to post... and my lovely outdated laptop doesn't have any editing programs to resize the photo whatsoever. Not even paint.

I'll post it from work tomorrow. :-D Thanks though!

That is the rubber boot for the clutch lever.
*unlikely scenario* Oil coming out of there is a bit of a concern as it could be either from the front gearbox seal or the engine rear main seal.
But don't panic yet.
*likely scenario* It could also be trapping oil that has past down the side of the motor (unlikely) or picking up fluid from a leaky clutch slave cyl.
Looking at the image it appears the slave is indeed leaking as witnessed by the fluid on the lower mounting point.
Give the clutch slave boot a squeeze and see if any fluid comes out of that.
or
Have a taste of it. Oil tastes quite different to brake fluid.
Just don't swallow.

Wun... leaky slutch slave? I knew Seniorita was a tartt but golly!

FFG and Andrew: Cool. I'll have another look tomorrow and do the squeeze. I think I'll leave tasting it to someone else. Heh.

Here's hoping for good weather next weekend so I can change it.

Yep, you have a U/S clutch slave cylinder. 8) Had the same thing on my NB8B @ 140k. Fit a new one, bleed it, clean up around everything and you'll be on your way!
Cheers, Dan.
