Hi guys just wondering if the 99 1.8 will run in my 94 na8 with the stock ecu and loom? The 1.8 in the na8 at the moment is blowing alot of smoke and using around 4L of oil a week if drĂven every day. I got hold of mania and they have a 99 engine and just wanted to know what kind of job it would be to swap them over. I was always going to put a NB head on anyway because of the HLA tick was annoying and even new lifters started ticking 2000kms afterwards.
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Kal

Im pretty sure they are a direct swap Kal, and it should run with the NA8 ecu. You will have to run a sepertae rpm switch to activate the VICS on the intake though. Though I might be wrong..

Short answer is yes, but as GC noted you'll need an rpm switch to activate the VICS if you use the '99 (NB8A) intake manifold. It will run without the rpm switch, but VICS won't be activated as it should be around 5500rpm & above which will affect power & torque accordingly. It would be best to use the '99 intake manifold along with '99 fuel rail & injectors, but you can get away with modifying the '94 (NA8) intake manifold. The one thing you can't use is the '99 alternator as it requires the '99 ECU to control it, & amongst other things, the '94 loom isn't PnP on a '99 ECU - plug is different for a start. There a few other minor items, but from memory these are the main considerations.

Different cam angle sensor and change from OBD-I to OBD-II are 2 other obvious things that springs to my mind. Send Richard at MX-5 Plus an email, he will be able to answer any questions.

I was talking to chris at mx5 racing (mini cooper racing) today as he is like 5 minutes away from my house, I got a fair bit of info from him wich was a big help and was also talking to ajay from mania for a bit. Its all pretty clear on what i have to do now. Going to mania tomorow to put a deposit on a 99 1.8 with like 35000kms on it :D
