Was wondering if you Right Drivers have any type of performace parts for 89-05 automatic Miatas Should as shift kits to reprogram the trans - different stall conveters & rachet shifters etc. Here its hard to find anyone who can work on them & get it right the first time around besides a Mazda dealer $$$$$$$$$.

Ya thats what I get here. Get a 5 or 6 speed car. Its a shame they make all kinds of performace stuff for domestic automatic here for street & racing. May 66 Chevy ll drag car is automatic. So I quest the time hasnt come yet for performance automiata stuff for the Miata.

Automatic MX5s were very rare here before the current NC model.

Nice looking little car you've got there tho. The gold on red is always a good combo.

A turbo will improve the performance of your auto..

How close is the MX5 early model to the auto trans in the RX7?

Perhaps there are some bits for that transmission that will improve your shift points and shift speed?

That's a classic misnomer

There's nothing wrong with auto transmissions!

I would say that any good automatic transmission expert should be able to advise you about using different torque converters and they should also be able to alter your shift points etc, even if there are no manufactured performance parts available.
I have a guy in Marrickville that can work wonders on auto gearboxes, but he's a bit far away from you I'm afraid.

Who did the box in your drag car?
Maybe they can help you out, or perhaps look for specialists who do work for the import crowd.
They're working on hotting up 4cyl Jap cars all the time and must have some knowledge of parts available for your Miata.

Having said all the above, small motors don't really work at their best with autos. They just don't have the torque to overcome the losses in an older auto box, whereas V8's and big sixes can actually go faster with an auto.

A really good fix would be to replace the torque converter with a wet clutch, as Mercedes have now done with the autos in AMG SL's. From the reports I've read of it, they reckon it transforms an auto gearbox.

In my view a most significant improvement in engine response (for vehicles fitted from new with a catalytic converter) can be had by replacing the original sized catalytic converter (no matter how 'young' it might be !) with an oversize one. A 2.5 inch stainless steel, ceramic high flow cat. from any exhaust shop will noticeably improve your throttle response and will cause the exhaust note to be slightly more pleasing too.
Automatic transmission in heavy traffic makes a lot of sense....

I have a complete MS exhaust system need to check it out & see what sizes it is. Got a 4:30 torsen chunk out of my 99 parts car was thinking about install it to give alittle more on take off an comeing out of the corners.

What exactly do you wanting to achieve? I see your thinking of changing diff ratios, that will definately help.
By adding extra clutches into each clutch pack will give you better drive through each gear as the hydraulics with "pick up" drive quicker.
By reshimming the valves in the body will also allow more pressure to the clutch packs, but you will have a harsher shift.
Rebiulding the torque convertor and changing vanes will allow higher stall speeds etc.
All auto trans manufactures biuld their autos to be hopefully nice and smooth. Not performance orentated.
It really bepends what you want and when you want it, any GOOD auto trans shop should be able to do the mods to beef up ANY auto trans, after all, all autos still work the same way, hydraulics and clutch packs = drive.
In AUS, due to our small markets compared to the US, modes like these are usually done by people who love a challenge. We are probably "lucky"??? that we have no where near whats avail to you guys so we make our own. We have some very clever people working in the auto industry in Aus, ( until the top NASCA and F1 teams pinch em!!) I was lucky to work with a guy many years ago who had been a tester for Borg Warner and who knew autos inside out and was willing to share the ins and outs of moding them.
So talk to different shops and different mechanics and try and get some feed back from customers who they have done work for, or talk to the boys at Mazda and see if they do weekend work!!!!

off topic, had a look at your site and the pics, and thought to myself "gee they look familiar", especially the ones of the court house, then it dawned on me that big bro was at Atlantia in the Aussie security and spent 3 mths travelling around the local states and took thousands of pics, thats why they looked so familiar!!! He loved it over there and always wanted to go back!!!

Thanks for the good input. gears an shim the valve body & some stronger springs in the valve body should do what I want so it will shift alittle faster & harder. Also like to figure some way to get the paddles & automatic & maual shifter to work on my 01 like the NCs. A big problem we have here in this area its not a hot bed for turner cars & parts. The closest Mazda dealer is 65 miles away. So the net & magazines are where we get our parts & info from.

I'm sure there is some way of adding paddles, but as the auto box in the older 5's are fully hydraulic, and not computer controlled it would mean you would need special linkages made up, to say nothing about finding paddles and having them mounted properly.
If the box was computer controlled, then it would be a lot easier to fit paddles, as you would only need a pair of micro switches to activate the gearchanges, if you have enough knowledge as to where and how to connect them.

Can you get a Hurst or similar shifter for it?
I know that Hurst has some realy nice shifters for auto boxes.
