Air Filter Change

I am about to reinstall the original air cleaner (replacing a fine metal gauze one) fitted to the car when i bought it. A friend said that the ECU automatically adjusts the mixture when refitted. Is this correct or does the mixture and idle need to be manually adjusted? Thanks on behalf of a non mechanic. If this is OK to do I'll have the filter up for sale soon for anyone interested.

If your friend meant that the ECU will detect more or less air flow going through your Air Flow Meter flap, which is dependent on how restrictive the filter's media is, and thus adjust fueling in accordance to what it wants it's AFR to be, then yes, it will "change" the ECU.
But having said that, the change is minor and fairly neglible, so changing air filter to whatever you want is easy and safe and you don't have to do anything else.
That metal gauze filter you stated sounds pretty nasty Rob, so the changing it is for the best.
