I'll see what I can dig up.

From memory its 85kw at 6000rpm and 130nm at 5000 or 5500rpm

Are you interested in Flywheel or rear-wheel kilowatts?

1597cc
85kW at 6500rpm
130Nm at 5500rpm
955kg kerb weight (5sp manual)

Data from WHEELS magazine issues Oct 1989, Apr 1990, Jul 1992, Jul 1993 (all the same figures)

BTW, the best acceleration figures WHEELS achieved were 0-100km/hr in 10.0s and 0-400m in 17.0s. That's with driver and passenger, plus at least half a tank of fuel.

The above power/torque figures would be with standard 10 degrees BTDC ignition timing. Setting to 14 degrees BTDC increases the maximum power at the rear wheels by 10% (ref. Norman H. Garrett III), so I'd assume that translates to 93kW at the flywheel. Every bit counts!

BTW when they are quoting Kerb weight, it is dry or with fuel?

guessing these figures are all at the flywheel?
stock NA6 should pull roughly 65kW ATW, yes? depending on the condition of the engine...

thanks all

my engine is 20 years old and has seen a spirited 164kkm

i was interested so i could have an idea of the powerband - better to be shifting at the right point rather than be ringing her neck for no reason at all

That's usually the dry weight.

my 1990 has 232,000 on the clock, and has seen a full gearbox rebuild 80,000 k's ago.
i still let it rev right up to about 6,500, i've only ever hit the limiter once.
it's fine, runs very nicely. on 98octane stuff of course.
probably no need to worry too much, they're a strong engine. although you should be able to feel when the torque curve flattens out. no idea when this happens, i just know it by feel.

the rev limiter doesnt scare me - she regularly sees over 7000. Now i know that there is no reason to wring it that far.

I had before and after dyno runs on my 89 NA with 100k on the dial at that time.

before full 2.25 exhaust/CAI/12 degree advance = 66kw at the wheels

after: 74kw at the wheels.

torque results are questionable, the machine purported 292nm of torque at peak.... thats a bit rich.

Before any mods to my 1991 NA6

63rwkw. 130nm

after mods :D 94rwkw and 295nm at the wheels

OK, peak torque is at 5500rpm and peak power is at 6500rpm. However, your car will still be making slightly more RWkW at 7000rpm in 2nd gear (94km/hr) than it would if you shifted to 3rd gear at the same speed (4930rpm). Mine does. And when I'm having a go, I don't shift until I hit about 7200rpm just before the cutout at 7250rpm. By then, the RWkW in 3rd are pretty closely matched to what you're getting in 2nd, so there's no point being in 2nd any more. Provided that you're not holding your engine at constant 7000rpm, you won't do it any harm at all.

The 955kg kerb weight includes a full tank of fuel (or is it 90% full - not quite sure) plus the oil and coolant. I'm not sure what figure is quoted in the original MX-5 manual - don't have it with me to check. However a figure of 930kg seems to float around (eg redbook) and perhaps that corresponds to the dry weight?

BTW, EU kerb weights tend to include a 90% tank filling, 68 kg for the driver and 7 kg for luggage.
