Did you drill a hole in the fire wall?

You are refering to the pipe that runs across the engine bay? I helped forum member Doogle make one of them fit a while ago, it was an absolute PITA. He had the same problems as you, perhaps you could PM him. It just wouldn't sit right... We managed to squeeze it in after a lot of effort and buggering around. I don't think it is a very well made product... At least thats my opinion. I'm sure it works though.
Perhaps you could also call mania and ask for some advice from them too?

when i called up the only advice i got was 'play around with it, you might have to cut some of the hoses down etc to fit it'... not too helpful there but thats all i might be able to pass on.
i was fitting the enlarged air intake, not the cold air intake... but perhaps some pics could help of your problems?
cheyne, didn't you say that you made your own bracket or got one elsewhere?

(piping after the airflow meter)
This made me think he has the CAI and the enlarged piping.
Doogle, have you had any issues with the hoses the piping is pressing on?

Not even worth the 30c you paid for the call

Jet do you have any photos? It might make it easier to see if something is wrong.

not really any issues at all yet ben, other than that on longer drives the radiator hose will heat up the intake pipe which may defeat the purpose of a cai (?).. but we're going off topic

I was wondering the same thing actually, from all the postings i've heard about this type of cold air intake you "gain up to 5kw max", however the heating issues is another thing that bothers me, i guess if you wrapped it in thermo heat wrap you could get something? but then for the cost of the mania intake, you could make your own for a third of the cost with a pod filter, flexi hose and a drill or spend some more and get the jackson air intake?
But yeah, back to the issue at hand, go to bunnings or any hardware shop and grab like a metal coupling type plug (as you can tell i have no hardware no how

) its almost like a sink entry plug sort of thing, you could use that as an adapter bracket to mount a smaller piece of pvc piping to hold up the air intake.
If you don't get what i'm saying, i'll hunt down the links, a couple of guys on miata.net have done some DIY intakes using this method

the pipe the runs along the front parallel to the radiator is the enlarged intake.

it's not a direct swap - the output signal is different, so you will need a piggyback controller of some sort.
from your description it sounds like the enlarged intake is sitting too far forward in the engine bay. perhaps it could be fixed by shortening the rubber/silicone joints on the ends? mine wouldn't stop rubbing the underside of the bonnet until i made a custom radiator top tube... even then i thought it was too tight but i think the benefits outweigh the costs, so it stays.

i think you'd actually need a standalone after market ecu, in which case you could delete the afm & use a map sensor. better off using an rx7 series 4 or series 5 afm & swapping the na6 afm internals in to it - more info here:
