Anyone have an Engine damper???

Postby wun911 » Fri Jun 05, 2009 1:48 pm

I still havent installed my GB engine mounts, I was thinking of installing this thing instead:

http://www.eautoworks.com/product-Weapon-R-25410.htm

or

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Engine-Damper-Maz ... 4003r16253

Its like a shock absorber for the engine so it doesnt move as much.

Im guessing it has same effect as stiffer engine mouts but its easier to install???

Anyone have one?

i think it is designed for engines that produces a lot of torque. A high torque engine would twist, therefore it would require a engine dampener in order to prevent or slow down that twist.

Right you are there Steve. The difference is mostly noticeable during quick shifts at high RPM, but as already stated, there's not that much difference.

Lightyear (David) has one and from what i understand it looks great in the engine bay but does stuff flower all.
The dampener itself is useless (it was an ebay one). You'd be better off just running a solid bar!
But I digress, how about you fit those mazdaspeed engine mounts? I have and it does make a difference.
And they are easy to fit, just pull the motor out and in they go!! :P :P

Pour flour, water, a little milk and a little salt into your engine. Start car up. Let it run until it dies.

You will then have engine damper.

Yes. My race car has one. It is different to using stiffer engine mounts. The damper stops the top/front of the engine twisting which in turn puts less stress on the engine mounts and allows the whole drivetrain to stay better aligned. Mine is modified for very little movement. In the old days, we use to put chain on the lower left hand side of V8 blocks connected to the chassis to do exactly the same thing.

But engine mounts ar edirect replacment whereas an engine damper is something added into the engine bay...More weight.

The engine mounts aren't too bad as long as you have 2 people. Why do you want the damper Wun? I only installed the mazda speed mounts to reduce movement during heel and toe. I found that at 7000rpm the engine twisted enough that going from 5th to 4th was sometimes resulting in 6th because I need to pull over even further than normal with the drivetrain twisted. So for consistency I put in the mazdaspeed mounts which fixed me up. I havn't compression locked the car since on turn 2 at wakefield.

Hi,

I got a slightly more expensive damper from ebay recently

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda-Mi ... ccessories

Delivery was quite quick and it is decent enough quality. fitting was no problem. Be aware that it fits on the exhaust side of the engine, if you have a cone filter, you may have problems depending on the size and position. Stand looking over the exhaust side wing and consider whether you can get a rod from the right side of the shocker top mount directly to the engine? If so you will be fine.

Do they work - yeap, i have a sprint car and I don't go from 2nd to 5th any more. My engine mounts are not the best, but I still think it would help a lot if you had stiffer mounts
