And so I decided to change the oil in the shift turret

When I took the shifter out and took the brass bush out this is what it looks like now

its from my NB8A 5 Speed which has an IL Motorsport Quick Shift Kit fitted to it

Very not normal !

Well the fact that before it was nice and smooth now it looks like its been through a cheese grater, I would say no not normal.

any idea what the hell is going on?

have you got a quick shifter?

maybe you didn't fit the busher in properly. i remember the first time i fitted mine, it was very clunky, so i knew i had fitted it in wrong.

second time round it was as smooth as silk.

i'd better take a look at mine

I wish i could find where i put mine, so I could stick it in.

you just put it in drop the shifter in and its all good isn't it :S

I thought you had to whack it in with a hammer or something??

i didn't have to wack it in with a hammer :S

plastic one yeah but not with this brass one

it was perfect fit wasn't tight fit

not quite, when u stick the gear stick back in, the little notches on the the stick have to align perfectly. mine wasn't, so it sounded crunchy when i changed gears. what is when i knew the bushing would slowly wiggle out of place. when i pulled out the gearstick to check, the bushing was definitely not sitting flat.

hmmmm maybe I'll have to pull it out tonight and have a quick look again but I can't see how its not correctly fitted

I purchased a metal bush as part of last years group buy, can't remember if that was a beatrush or another make. It is installed in my original 5spd gearbox (no quick shift).

The first thing I noticed was that the metal bush was not a sung fit, unlike the original plastic bush, i.e. I had to drop the bush into the turrent and then insert the gear stick. Over the last month or so I have noticed that the gear changes have become very notchy. I have been meaning to check the clutch slave cylinder, as well as the new bush. After seeing the above photos I think the bush will be my priority.

Here is my thinking. If the bush is fully free floating, i.e. does not fit snugly to the ball at the end of the gear stick, could it not sit too low when compared to an original bush? If so consequently the gear stick is catching the top edge of the bush, rather than being housed inside the bush, and causing the damage. If you drained the gear box turrent of oil you maybe able to see where the bush sits in comparison to the end of the gear stick?

My one was fitted the way you did too
Had to drop the bush into the turrent then put the gear stick back in

Yeah i was actually thinking that might be the reason why this was happening the other day as well

Let us know what your one looks like when you take a look I'm interested in seeing if yours is the same as mine or its still in perfect condition

Well. I had a chance to pull out my brass bush and took the following pics.







In my case the internal top 3mm is where the ball at the end of the gearstick comes into contact with the bush. There is also signs of wear/pitting around the inside top edge of the bush

AZNTieN, is your MX-5 a daily driver? If so it might explain why yours has worn faster than mine, as my MX-5 is a generally a weekend driver. I would not have expected the bushes to have worn so fast. I was thinking of putting the original plastic bush back in, but I have misplaced it

Might be an idea if others that purchased the bush take a look at theirs and let the forum know how their bushes are wearing to see if there is a pattern of wear. depending on OEM or Qickshift gear stick, and regular or irregular driver?
