hey all just wondering whats involved when modifying the cam cover for aftermarket cam gears? Is it simply cutting the cover to access it?

woo never used a slot drill like that before.. thought it would snap.. guess im taking too meaty a cut..
with the NB8A you need to retain the part that holds the cam angle sensor and get cam gears to suit.. if you look at the standard gear on the inlet and where the cam angle sensor sits/gets its signal from you'll see what i mean.. if you search around theres afew photos of what im talking about.. looks a little odd the sensor and a part of the valve cover left floating there but it seems to be the easier way.
im sure there would be some computer trickery that you could do however to get a computer to either not need the cam angle sensor or retro fit a na8a sensor setup to the back of the cams as im sure ive heard some one mention before.
what cam shafts were you looking at using?? im installing a set of tomei pon cams and have been told since they are a milder cam and when ground they have ground a little more advance into them id be running any adjustable cam gears at standard settings or pretty much anyway so no need for all the drama when id be getting next to no gains..
THOUGH if its 1-2rwkw its 1-2rwkw and if your trying to squeez all the ponnies you can out of it then yeah your going to have to i guess.. for me it wasnt worth the dollars or the time.

could go the mazda 323 cam cover too. not quite as nice looking but doesn't have non removeable cover over the cam gears. though having SVT might not be so good?

you think you could just pull that off with an angle grinder?

cant do any of this with the NB covers, you must retain the CAS (cam angle sensor) located at the left of the cam cover.

i noticed that and am curious to how the CAS has been mounted/relocated.
i was mainly reffering to swaping the cam covers though.

I have another question from the big forum.
"Just one other point though, I noticed that the specified lash settings are shown as 0.00000. Please check whether the proposed cams are for hydraulic lifters or solid lifters as solids would normally have a specified valve lash. The 99 has solid lifters."
also mxhevan can you please check if the inlet cam has these red dooyes pictured

I've been thinking about doing this to mine, seems a shame to hide the nice adjustable gears
How hard are the 323 covers to get hold of SuperMazdaKart? I assume it fits the same as the MX one just without the gear cover.

sometimes you can get lucky from classifieds over at fordlaser.com where an engine has blown up & isn't going to be rebuilt. sometimes same case at autowreckers if they've taken an old wreck thats been sitting in someones backyards for a decade. U-pullit wrecking is probably a good choice to try, just go in & take one off the engine yourself.
fits the same as long as the engine doesn't have SVT stuff. might have to do something with the second vent though? looks like it'll still clear the coil pack if it's mounted like an MX-5 though.
