I am going to slowly install a clutch over Easter myabe over 6 days or so. I have the car up on ramps.



I have removed the shifter turret and covered it in glad wrap.

Drained the oil from the gearbox.

I have removed rear muffler, some of the under body bracing, thats around the gear box.
Im not sure what bracing I have to remove to get the mid pipe out?

Detached the speed cable and reverse light cable (cricled in red and blue but not sure which cable does what)
I have unbolted the three bolts circled in yellow from the PPF.



Called it a day played badminton and won every game against FFG.

You must have stolen those ramps from a caryard.

Wun I probably said it before but check your library for a repair manual- even the NA is going to be much the same for process. You will need a clutch alignment tool at least that has been my experience in the past on other vehicles. Not sure if you can support the gearbox for up and down- the pros have all these aids. Nice job with the ramps - I assume they are sturdy but suggest you put some chocks around the tyres. PS badminton is a great game.

Im reading the instructions as I go along. I have read them a couple of times but some termonolgy is difficult for me as I am not a car person. The ramps I have borrowed from a neighbour hehehehe so dam lucky.
Im trying to aproach it like a science project materials (bits and pieces needed) methods (instructions from miata net results conclusion (drivign it away).

Ok update

The downpipe is OFF!!! Horay!!! I have not stripped any of the nuts!!! (I used 6 point air tool style sockets to make sure I don't strip them)
There is a clamp that holds the down pipe together and was to difficult to remove the impossible bolt is circled in yello so it all came off in one piece. The Oxygen sensor I didnt touch I simply un did it on the engine side.



The bit circled in red is where the leads to the "oxygen sensor" was attached The bit cricled in yello is odd seems to be blind end tube but has nothing to do with clutch install.


Started to accumulate some nuts and bolts so I put them into plastic bags and wrote down what each nut does and where it goes. Otherwise difficult to put everything back together again. In the background you can see a bit of the body bracing that has to come off the NB8B in order to install clutch.

wow. clutch change. go hard wun. are u putting in a new (lighter) flywheel?

A flywheel fit for the prince of liteness....

It feels quite heavy maybe its closer to 5 kg I will weigh it properly later.


Back of the flywheel can see lots of speed holes around the edge of the flywheel for reduced moment of inertia.


All the little holes line up to the pink thing should be good.

Nice Going Wun, I picked up my Clutch kit this afternoon and I'll stick the car up tonight to drain the gearbox (makes it a little lighter and less chance of spilling think, nasty gear oil into your crotch . . . . )

go on, i dare you .. .ask me how i know ......

Quesiton 1: Can I remove this rear brace outlined in red? It comes out all as one piece I belive some bits are welded together. Are the bolts circled in blue ok to remove? It's in the way I need to remove it to get the mid pipe out of the way. I belive its an NB only thing???



I have marked out the drive shaft with liquid paper and noted which way the nuts go The nuts visible in the pic have been removed hower the 4th nut is still on.



Im having trouble gaining access to the 4th drive shaft nut. I know if push and roll the car fwd or back the drive shaft will turn and I will have access to the nut but the car is ballanced on ramps.... . In not sure what I will do but I will figure it out. I might jack the rear of the car up from the diff and turn the rear wheels! !

I havent even removed bell houseing yet lol

in response to your first question wun. yes, they can be removed. i removed them when installing my midpipe and axleback.

Thanks sliq I was a bit unsure about that step I really apreciate your help.

So exhaust is out of the car and in pieces on the drive way.


I have gone fishing for a gear box (the knots a bit weird but I never did do boy scouts)


All the bracing you have to remove to do clutch install is in this pic, I have tied all the associated bolts to the brace so I dont lose them The nuts on the rear brace is 19 mm.


My plan is to maybe jack from the diff up and rotate the wheels to gain access to the last bolt on the drive shaft, just need a bit more height I will find some pavers or bricks or something tomorow.


I have losened (but not removed yet) about 10 bolts of the 12 bolts from the bell housing and removed the clutch slave from the car (very difficult to find the other bolts they say you cant see them can only feel them).

I will probaby call it quits for today, If everything goes according to schedule I should have the bell houseing out tomrow and maybe start installing the flywheel.

Wun - word of caution...

DO NOT USE BRICKS OR PAVERS ..... Just DO NOT ....

They can crack and shatter under suprisingly little weight ....

Wood is your friend ....

wun, why not buy yourself some diff mounts, and install them yourself too?

it should make a very nice difference with the new clutch and flywheel
