Car runs weirdly intermittenly ><

Postby Szemen » Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:21 pm

My car has been running weirdly the last couple of days. But its only every now and then.

When I'm trudging along in traffic, usually in 4th or 5th gear, sometimes in 3rd gear, during acceleration the car would hesitate for a split second. When I mean hesitate,it feels like it shudders once before doing anything.

e.g 5th gear, decelerating from 70 down to 50. Traffic starts moving, speed has maybe dropped to 45. Accerlate. Intermittently, the car would (In this case) shudders hard 2-3 times before doing anything. Shuddering as in...not like almost stalling, but hard to explain, more like a slight shock.

another e.g. traveling on 4th @30km/h. Sometime when accelerating, it would shudder once, then start going again. This only happens momentarily after applying pressure on the accelerator.

try being in gear lower for a start

next question is model?
Went for a drive and there were slow cars everywhere, why are NC's so common . . . must be NC = Normally Cardiganed.

its a 95 NA.

This isn't normal in the first place, trudging along in trafffic at about 50km/hr, 5th was always fine for me, until i dip below 40km/hr it starts vibrating wanting to stall. Now it will shudder every now and again even though previously in the same situation it wouldn't. Being slow for the gear is most definitely not the problem its a different type of shudder :(

I was going to buy new leads tomorrow to see if that was the case as the current ones do seem old and have signs of oxidization.. As for plugs, i changed them about 3000km ago. The car itself has done 180k.

Well then if the plugs were changed then the next step is leads then Coil Packs

Hopefully it ends at the leads otherwise the coil pack....I'll be estimating about 400-500 for a new coil pack :S

30km/hr in 4th gear and 45km/hr in 5th gear is just wrong and bad for your engine/drivetrain anyway - no wonder it stumbles/misses/complains. You should be at least two gears lower than what you're using at those speeds.

Agreed, lower your gears.

You are lucky to even use 5th in around town driving.

Alright, I've taken the advice of using lower gears :P The autoshop close to my place didn't have leads for mx5 in stock so getting them on Monday.

Driving around today, 3rd gear, 50km/hr, turn a corner, throttle on, shudder about twice before accelerating at a faster rate :(

New leads have fixed it. Took out the lead to cylinder 4, the base seemed burnt :S Ive put new leads in and going to check it in about a week or 2, seem what the base looks like then.
