Improving Intake Sound ....

Ok, so I might be getting old, but i miss the induction roar of some of my old sports motors ...

My Na6a has a real nice, classic, sounding exhaust - i believe it is totally stock, but the intake is missing a little somthing ....
I've been considering a Pod filter - yea its ricey, but sounds great !

I know i will need an adaptor, but which one ?

Super crap had one that looked right, but didnt list any mazdas on the back ...

Also, I know i will need to shield the pod from hot air, as well as 'boxing' it for total legality ...

But is there a preferred "pod" filter / adaptor combo ?

Cheers

where abouts are you?

I have the Mania CAI with the stock standard 20YO excaust from front to back.

You get music from the front & rear.

if you are in sydney.....come for a ride.

I also have the mania intake, it really roars down low and screams at high rpm. something you need to get!!!

Does require cutting of the firewall though......

I'm really trying to avoid the whole "cutting" thing ....

But, when in rome .......

The Pic of the Mania CAI shows what looks to be an RX-7 AFM ....

Can i use this CAi with my NA 'flapper' AFM ?

yes, it's compatible with both. the AFM pictured is actually one which comes standard on (late model?) NA8s.

Why not just drill some holes in your stock air box? I made three one inch holes in the cold side of mine. Its given me the desired sound, similar to a CAI but no where near as loud or angry all the time like the mania one, but still nice and throaty when you want it to be.

I also drilled a few more holes, if you open up about 5-6 one inch holes it sounds about as loud and angry as the mania one, I just left it at three as I think that is a nice medium ground.

Best of all its free and is in my opinion a much better match to a stock exhaust as the mania firewall intake sound overpowers the standard exhaust note. You could also try taking the snorkel off the back of the air box, that gives a bit of growl at WOT with no other mods, but when you do that you pick up hotter air so I put it back on.

+1 for mania intake, super loud.

- also did what bensale has done, medium loud, and it's free, it's what I have currently.

Oh yes, I'm liking this one :)

I AM a tight-arse, and free is always better than $$$ in my book.

Its only for sound, i'll admit it, but it would still be nice....

I'll give it a go when I'm next in the garage ....

BTW, are stock Air-boxes easy to get hold of if i wish to return it to stock ?

cheers

Yes, any of the wreckers could sell you a stock intake box, they seem fairly common.

As a didn't like the volume of six holes so i covered three of them with black electrical tape  I did that a few 1000 kms ago and haven't had any issues with it falling off and you can't see it either. For a free mod that takes only 15 minutes (taking my time) is definitely worth while and a good interim step before you spend the money on a mania intake or similar if you crave more noise and the slight performance increase.

Well, I bit the bullet and did it tonight ....

3 1.5" Holes on the cold-side (two on the bottom and one on the side)

Wow, much deeper at the wider throttle openings... very nice

No Raucous, not offensive, but a nice deep tone ...

Also improved by removing the cover over the exhaust - no more annoying rattle

Thanks guys, VERY recomended Mod ....

Glad to here it, I'm definetly glad I did it too, a good match to the stock exhaust note isn't it, not overpowering.
