Stupid mistake this morning

Postby Oni » Thu Feb 12, 2009 1:57 pm

So i checked my oil today before work and it was a little down so ive topped it up then realised that i didnt put my glasses on ( i need to them to drive ) so i backed the car out and went and grabbed my glasses. Drove 25k's to work then at lunch another 15k's and when i arrived i could smell hot oil. I pop'd the bonnet and there was oil everywhere. i had forgotten somehow to put the oil cap back on...i left the cap off so that the car would cool down faster. after 10min i put it back on and had to go to a meeting. After my meeting i checked the oil level and it was sitting on full. How much damage could this have done? tonight im gonna clean up my engine bay and hope that the oil hasnt done any lasting damage to any hoses/lead. such a bad day. What should i check do to be sure ive not killed something, altho ill have to drive another 30k's to get home tonight :( thanks all im such an idiot

Should be fine, just a bit.... oily :D

Unless the oil got anywhere really weird, or a heap of crap fell into the engine, its all fine i would say

I did this just before a club run around 3 years ago...

Heaps of degreaser and a hose pipe (being careful with the electrics) and all fine

I'm glad I'm not the only one !!!! :)

You should be fine, it'll just be messy!

My dad left the cap off his Nissan Patrol diesel and drove about 500km, it made a bit of a mess but didn't even use that much oil!

i did this on the morning of a track day. it made a hell of a mess but it cleans up ok with some rags. it's been fine ever since, i wouldn't be too worried about it.
