Ok, I will have a go. At the end of the gear stick there is a plastic cup (selector bush). This cup sits in the selector of the gear box and assists in a smooth gear change. As the car gets older the plastic selector wears and a needs replacing. Beatrush make a metal (brass) replacement which can improve gear changes, especially if the plastic cup is worn.

They cost around $23 and can be found on ebay.

bought one from a forumite a while back for about $20 plus local postage. pity that beatrush gear is so exxy to post, i.e. same price as the bush! there was a group buy late last year, but didn't read it as I already had one - here's the thread may be some left or could get some remade - Caff got the ball rolling, but looks like Sliq finalised it.

Thanx guys for your very helpful replies. I'd like to get one to suit a 5 speed(NB8A) but Ebay doesn't appear to mention the NB8A ?? But would it be the same as for the NA8C ?

Thank you Dunky for your info. How many ks had your car done when you put the brass bush in ? And how did it improve the gear change ?
I 've looked at the Ebay site that Juffa indicated but the brass bush for an NB8A (5spd) is not obvious to me amongst the models NA6CE,NA8C,NB6C,NB8C which are listed. I tried to click on 'Ask the seller a question' but Ebay insisted instead that I had to sign in as a buyer/seller which at this stage I'm neither. Also I'm very daunted by the whole Ebay thing as I've had no experience with it at all. S.P

SP if you're new to the ebay thing then just bear in mind the $23 postage quoted for that item in addition to the $23 for the item itself.

The NA6CE was the Japanese equivalent to our NA6, while the NA8C was the Japanese equivalent to our NA8. The NB6C is the Japanese equivalent to the NB6 which the UK, & I think some other parts of Europe, got. So, the NB8C could be either NB8A or NB8B or NB8C, the last of which designation I believe we also used here in Australia. The complicating factor is that there's supposed to be a slight difference in bush size between the 5 & 6 speed, i.e. the NB8A (except 10AE) & NB8B/C.

If you go ahead with the purchase, perhaps just let them know you have a '99 6 speed, but frankly I reckon you could source one locally for a lot less.

Thank you 93 Clubman for your comprehensive reply. Clearly Ebay is way too complicated for me !
Where would you suggest I could start looking for this brass bush locally ?
Had I not been able to find the car I have, the Clubman model was my alternative. Whenever I drive my car I think how much better would be the experience without power assisted steering.

Thank you sliq. I was about to seek your assistance but discovered that a local (to me) forumite has offered me a spare one that he has and I've accepted it. Presuming its the one I'm after I'm in luck. But thank you for 'the window of hope'.

SP, good to hear you've found one locally - let us know how it goes.

Btw, I believe it's not hard to depower that steering of yours - see following:

You need to remove both tie rod ends from the car, drop the rack out, then take it apart and remove the oil seal. Then just fill it with grease and re-assemble. The manual rack would be an additional cost and I don't believe it makes that much more difference. The steering is quite heavy without it though. There's a write-up on flyin miata.

Then again I've always liked the 10AE, & you were considering a white car next - what about a 2 owner white '93 Clubman just clicked over to 80,000 kms... :P

phatR, the group buy would be the wtg with these - seller & product are proven as Sliq & : Dunky can attest, but shipping from Japan individually makes them costly. It could first be worth PMing drifter & SPy vs. SPy from the last group buy - they might have a bush for 6 speed FS from the look of the last GB thread.

93 Clubman.. Thanks for your very interesting reply. Apropos depowering the steering I had formed the impression that a new manual rack would be needed, as well as a special idler pulley to accomodate the a/c. The all-up price, some years ago, was a thousand dollars.. plus a wheel alighnment. So I gave up on the idea. I might chase it up again now tho', thanks to your new simplified info, if I keep the car.
As for me having a white Clubman in my garage, the fantasy is great (and your car would be a beauty by the sound of you and it !) but sadly the reality is that if I replace my 10 it will be with an automatic. Time and tide and all that jazz !

Unless the NB8A &/ or 10AE is different, the AC idler pulley & bracket is not expensive. One on ebay (I think) recently for around $50(?) If I see one advertised I'll pm you a link. In depowering the system I suspect there would be a way to retain the PS pump & bracketing if you really wanted to. For example, on non PS cars fitted with the Jackson Racing Supercharger the PS pump & bracket is required to run the upgraded SC pulley tensioner. I suspect one could run the pump simply as dummy by taking out the impellers(?) which generate pressure. Then again, the AC idler pulley & bracket is not that dear, but not an option the JRSC upgraded tensioner example. Btw, my thoughts on the PS pump are just that, I am in no way mechanically qualified. I believe depowering your current PS setup will still be slightly different to replacing it with a manual rack given the different number of turns lock to lock, i.e. around 2.8 (PS) versus 3.6 (manual steering).
