Mate I've taken the easy way out. Richard at MX5Plus has his Mechanic doing mine ,as well as all the associated things, i.e. water pump ,crank seal , adjuster e.t.c. At the same time
i'm getting tie rod ends, ball joints, and NA8 front brakes fitted. Being a short nose motor i wanted to make sure that I had someone that knew what they were doing working on it.
I would have liked to have done it myself, but like an idiot I opened my mouth and told my wife that the extension to the rear veranda would be finished over xmas. To be Quite honest I'm a bit more comfortable working with timber than the inner workings of an engine

I always mark up the pulleys with a silver paint pen before I disconnect anything, but I've done this job a few times already so have found some tricks.

Yes the cam belt drive at the top marker (12 o'clock), the cam gears at I and E respectively. Release the belt tension pulley and rotate the cam drive clockwise around to the 2nd mark (at about 10 o'clock) and then tension the cam belt and lock in the tension pulley.

I find a 22mm (?may be 21m?) socket on a ratchet handle very useful for turning the engine.

It's a 21mm for the NA8 motor.
I just did mine yesterday when I change my crankshaft seal.
As has been mentioned above, I just white mark the cam belt on the I and E marks and make sure that the crank pulley is on TDC.
Then I just line it all up again for re-assembly.
easypeasy
