Not Starting/Main Relay Issues

Postby daffyflyer » Wed Dec 24, 2008 9:25 am

Got an intresting issue with the new 5 (will post thread about the new car, and some pics soon)

Ok, so it wont start,And if you pull a plug you'll see it has no spark.
If you remove the main relay and replace it with a section of wire bridging 2 of the pins, it will start and run fine.

But you replace the relay with a shiny new relay, it still doesn't start.

Im thinking the issue must be in the wiring behind the relay, as it doesn't happen when you only use 2 pins.

Any ideas of what to check? Id like to do all i can before emptying my wallet for a sparky..

I'm no auto electrian, but what you're doing, amongst other things, is possibly allowing more current &/ or voltage through, which can in itself be a problem. If this is the case, may be it's having an affect on another electronic component, so it may be more than wiring.

Btw, have you checked if Fuzz had this problem before?

clutching at straws here but i'd suggest just checking with a multimetre at various points along the wiring to make sure you have continuity. it may just be a broken wire somewhere?

Car never had this EXACT problem before, however it did have issues with broken wiring between the stereo and the speakers, so it may be a similar problem

Ok, thanks for the advice guys, will take a poke at it with a multimeter and see if the wires are actually attached to each other :P

Also the mechanics who did the rego inspection flattened the battery, which killed it (wont hold a charge anymore)

And it failed rego on (aswell as rear tyres worn) insuficcant headlight pattern (LEFT).. im not quite sure what they mean by that. they said it might be a bulb blown (might be? it either is or isn't and having looked at it both the lights WORK :? ), Im just going to point it at a wall with the lights on and make the left look like the right, however that might be!

Anyway, thus endith the rant, and other than that I <3 my MX5 and never do less than the speed limit around roundabouts since i bought it :P
