So, it's a great 30 degrees today. Decided to take the car out for a spin.

All good until taking off from a set of lights. Clutch engagement point dropped to the bottom qtr of its travel length requiring me to push the clutch to the carpet for each gear change.

Managed to get the car home. Clutch/Brake reservoir is on full. Took the cap off - nothing exciting in there. No leaks to see anywhere.

Called Mazda Roadside Service - useless. No interest in sending out their Mazda Roadside van (supposedly they do tyres and batteries only ) , and after 15 minutes of complaining, the best they could offer was a tow truck to a dealership tomorrow morning.

Have since let the car cool down, went back to it not long ago and everything seems close to normal again?!

Slightly concerned as the car is going to do an interstate run on Tuesday!

Will take the option of driving it in tomorrow morning... however seems strange that switching the car off and letting it cool down has semi fixed the issue

Hot hydraulic fluid. How often has the car been tracked or very heavily braked?

Brake fluid (common reservoir with the clutch) goes off and should be changed every 2 years - or less if used under severe conditions.

Car has only been on the track once (Mazda Drive Day - which is where it was pushed a little hard during the free lap time).

No really heavy braking, but the car sat idle for the first 6 months of ownership and is now being used daily (almost 7000km in the last six months). IIt may be possible that the fluid has gone 'off' a little.

Took her out again tonight and she seems fine. Will duck into Mazda tomorrow and see what they say.

We had problems on the track with the clutch fluid boiling. As suggested a flush with good quality brake fluid will probably solve the problem. Also check to make sure the engine pipe/flange isnt' leaking as this sends super hot air straight onto the cylinder/pipes.

Mazda may know what to do.......

Will try locate said flange pipe however I think all is good.

Stopped into a dealership this morning on the way to work, however they were fully booked and not interested in having a quick look.

Car's been fine since yesterday arvo.

Have booked it in for it's 12 month service in Jan and will get the fluid flushed then!

I possibly know what your problem.

After my car went for its last service to replace the clutch pedal it never felt right. The take-up point was different but I thought it was just a matter of getting used to it. A week or so later the first 50mm of travel was very soft so I thought that it must need bleeding, so I did that and still it was no better.
Finally after I almost couldn’t engage the clutch because the pedal was so low, I decided that it must be the install job done by the dealer so I went searching to see what they done wrong and this is what I found
Coming through the fire wall from the clutch master cylinder is a rod that connects to the clutch pedal arm. This rod is threaded so you can adjust the take-up point to your desired height and then set in place by a locking nut that tightens against the pedal arm. In my case the dealer service apprentice hadn’t tighten the locking nut down tight enough and it came loose. I know how this happened because it is a bitch to get to and tighten. So the rod had worked its way in towards the master cylinder, meaning every time I pushed the clutch in there was less and less actual throw of the piston in the master cylinder.
At this point you need to become a contortionist and twist at funny angles to see how to nip up the lock nut.
Initially I fixed mine so the there was little downward pedal movement before it became firm. Bad move as I needed to lift my foot too far to get take-up. So another 15 minutes of fiddling to get the firm pressure down about 25mm or so and get the lock nut tightened up. There is a split washer on the pin that holds the rod to the clutch pedal arm and it may be easier to pop that off and tighten the lock nut up with the two parts separated.
So there you have it. Reach in and if you can turn the rod by hand the lock nut is loose and that’s your problem.
