I've recently purchased a type II torsen centre from a fellow forumite.

I am looking to have it installed in the near future. I've done some research into installing diffs, and stantheman advises that if its the centre only, it is best to give it to the professionals.

My question is, how will I know if I need new bearings to go with the diff if the old ones are shagged? Is it only possible to tell once the diff is removed?

Also, in relation to the speedo sensor, a few guys on here, miata.net & clubroadster have said that after they've changed over the diff, they didn't change the speedo sensor (if anything, the speedo had a more accurate reading). Has anyone had any experiences with not changing this sensor? How much will it cost to get this new sensor? I know i should save the trouble of just getting a new sensor then and there but money is a bit short, knowing xmas is next week and i've bought the diff before even doing my xmas shopping

I'm anticipating a few of the responses to say, "drive your car with a GPS and compare the speed", but that's after the diff has been replaced. What i'm aiming to do is cut corners (where possible) without having to go back to the mechanics twice.

Also, car is an nb8b with standard open diff.

The speed sensor is mounted on the gearbox so physically changing the sensor is a totally different job to installing the diff. Stick the new diff in and save up for a new speed sensor next year if you need one. If you are just replacing the LSD centre and not the diff gears as well then the stock speed sensor will be fine.

If it's just the centre then you shouldn't need to worry about changing the speed sensor, since you will still have the original ratio.
Not sure about bearings though, I didn't get mine done when I got my diff changed to the torsen.
ps. I got mine done at mania, wouldn't want to try and do it myself unless you know what you are doing, looks like lots of marking compound was used to ensure it all matched up
