hi guys,
i bought a 6 speeder a few months ago, and its finally time to get the bearings replaced in it, the only problem is i dont really know any gearbox rebuilders, anyone have any recomendations? i'm pretty sure its the skipknot (something like that) bearing that needs to be replaced.
cheers

Could it be the spigot bearing you're referring to? This is not in the gearbox, but in the centre of the flywheel where it supports the end of the gearbox input shaft. It should have been replaced when the clutch and flywheel were fitted - Its easy to get to when the gearbox is removed. What are the symptoms that make you think you need to replace it?

yeah that sounds right, i bought the gearbox as is at a cheap price, the owner said that a bearing needed to be replaced, pretty sure it was the spigot. he said that shifting was twice as hard, everything else was fine though.

MX It's not a part that's on the Gearbox, it's on the crankshaft

The spigot bearing is not part of the gearbox. The spigot is fitted to the flywheel and "guides" the gearbox shaft.

ok got it, i bought the gearbox without a flywheel/clutch so i'm guessing it doesnt even have a spignot bearing ?

edit, from PO
gearbox was in superb nick but somehow whoever that installed the box for me forgotten the ever important spigot bearing
result:Vibration from the engine/clutch stuffed one of the bearings in the gearbox
Syncros and gears are still OK, bearings need changing.
it's hard to get into 1st and 4th gear (i still drive around with it on the car, just double the shifting effort)
good for rebuild/spares etc

this is not making much sense. Your gearbox clearly has a question mark hanging over it and will have to come out for fault diagnosis. Probably best that you take it to a gearbox repairer to at least observe the in situ problems. Consider that it is almost certain it will have to be removed and then stripped for examination- you might ask for $ guide for rectification though you will almost certainly get a response along the lines of "depends what we find".

bearings shouldn't affect it's shifting into certain gears. worn bearings would make a whining sound.
Worn or Syncrhros or other internal problems can give that effect
Describe in detail how it was when changing,
Did it stop moving into the selected gear then after a hard push jump into place?
Was it just Heavy in shaft movement?
Did it crunch sometimes when going into the hard gears?
Did it whine in neutral or whilst in a certain gear?
That may help to narrow it down

The small bearing located in the Flywheel is called the Pilot Bearing if I recall correctly, mine began to seize a few years ago and if that was the problem you will hear a spine tingling screeching sound - it scared the hell out of me when it first happened

My gearbox became hard to shift when my clutch cylinder began to leak fluid, I thought at first that it was my gearbox going wrong.
