Replacement coil pack

source a used one, how do you know you need a new coil pack? what are your symptions?

mmm, have you tryed swapping your friends coil pack over (if its the same model), that would be the best option rather then forking out $200+ for something that you may not need. Have you washed your engine bay lately? it could be something as simple as water being trapped in the spark plug chambers.

i have no idea how to check if you have a failing coil pack, i would also like to do this to mine, i'm sure there is a way, i just havent come accross it yet.

My NA did that a little while ago, it turned out to be the number 1 plug lead shot.
Replaced all the leads as good as gold since

Problem with 2nd hand ones is you don't know if it was a dodgy pack someone else is trying to offload :frown:

are you reffering to the splitfire individual coils? or that GM coil that some guys in the states use?

Coil packs are notoriously unreliable on the NB.

Search for "COP" on miata forum for coil-on-plug conversions

I think much money could be made supplying a kit to use cheaper coil packs.

If anyone is looking to troubleshoot this in the future - a dead coil will cause TWO cylinders not to fire, instead of just one. Each coil drives the spark plugs for two cylinders.

I found the deaths of my first two sets of coil packs to be unpredictable, but never actually tied down to a single cylinder, just lots of misfires and issues starting.

Mine failed progressively over a few months. It was most noticeable on a long climb on a warm day. The car would just lose more power the further up the hill you went, presumably as the coilpacks overheated. For a long time there was no missing or anything obvious like that. It felt more like the brakes were dragging.

I didn't nail the problem until finally the ignition cut completely on 2 cylinders and when I pulled over you could smell the heat in the coilpacks.
