SMB exhaust

Postby oongie » Mon Nov 10, 2008 3:45 pm

So here goes, looking at an exhaust system that can be sourced via retail in Australia, and I have heard good things about the SMB full exhaust...

I spoke to the sales team there and they advised that the Full system utilises the stock 4-2 headers and the SMB system connects from there.

So, the SMB system is only CAT, MID PIPE and MUFFLER...

Does it really give you the bang for buck?
$1600.00 odd...

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

FULL EXHAUST SYSTEM - MAZDA MX-5

This system utilises the original flange postions. This photo illustrates our system bolts to the car's original headers. Due to the factory header pipes being quite good and difficult to improve upon, we have opted to remove the final part of the extractors and replace it with dyno proven 1;3/4" set of secondaries. However we are developing a set of header pipe to replace the original ones

$1637.00

I gather your refering to the above, I suggest you add a resonator to it, if you dont want it sounding like dieing cow.

If your happy to shop around Hitech mufflers & Best Mufflers have done some nice custom stainless work on NB's.

Ok, call me pedantic, but I don't really like the idea of custom... it ends up at the hands of the fabricator and what sort of mood they feel...

The idea of an off the shelf kit after lots of research I feel may be the best method...
Flame on?

quoted for truth. blackster's one sounds exactly like mine (even though blackster's got the SE)

i don't know about buying one brand new, because it is quite steep. for bang for buck, i'd go for something cheaper because gains from exhaust aren't that great.

like blackster said, those two exhaust places are very reputable.

hitech mufflers do a lot of work for ferraris, lamborghinis and the like. i was going to get mine done there but black max happened to sell his as i was looking.

best mufflers have a lot of novel brands. i'd go for remus if i had $$$ lying around. their sounds is just as smooth, maybe a bit more exotic.

what exactly were u looking for oongie? sound or performance?

Flame me... but really looking at both...
I had looked at the Remus muffler... but its only a muffler ... I really am looking for a whole system...

I have been looking for a while and now we have a bonus this month at work so my budget is roughly $1500.00

I had Best mufflers tig weld an x-force resinator into my SMB system, made a substancial diference in terms of noise and the work was great. If I was to do custom work again, I wouldnt hesitate in getting either of those shops mentioned to do the work.

yes. remus is only the tip.

but smb can make u a midpipe with resonator. midpipes are pretty much all the same, just a long tube of steel with flanges.

There's some great exhaust systems from Japan, i'm sure a few places could order one in for you.

You mean the muffler, a tip is misleading.

For overall nicer sound without sounding farty and obnoxiously loud, alot of people recommend getting just the muffler.

Majority of "cat back" exhausts for NB's are mufflers only, because the cat is connected to the midpipe, so you can't really get a "cat-back", like the NA or most other Japanese cars.

As said if you have money Autoexe titanium- $1300+ [ not worth it just for a muffler]

If you are on a cheaper budget you can get N Power muffer which is a racing beat copy- $250 shipped to your door.

If you want rare, get an RSR exmag GT2. :D

I, got a 2.5 inch Magnaflow exhaust for my turbo mx5. $1,000 fitted.
Made a big difference.
Looks similar to the SMB exhaust.
Sound is better than standard.

oongie, you could buy my 2nd had stainless smb exhaust if you want, its a 2.25in with hi flo cat mid pipe, resonator and rear muffler. would you want the xforce extractors to go with it??

Its all currently bolted to an nb8a.The hi flo cat was a slightly custom job done by mania but it is quality and works well with out being loud (unless you are flat to the floor). With the roof down on the freeway and no music you can only just hear the exhaust.NO DRONE WHAT SO EVER!!!!!!!!

Ben :D (you know you want it oongie :D )

Sorry nube question

Heavier or lighter than stock?

How much heavier? vs how much more power you get out of it?
every ounce counts
