does anyone know if the 1.6 and 1.8 timing belts are the same? i was planing to run a timing belt w/o air con, but gates dont seem to make them for the nb? i'm not sure if nb's came optional with a/c or not like the na's did. Does anyone know of any other timing belts that fit the 1.8 with out a/c?
thanks

That's a drive belt, not the timing belt.

no, the drive belt (or fan belt) runs off the crankshaft to turn the alternator, water pump, power steering & aircon.
The cam belt (timing belt/timing chain depending on engine) runs off the crankshaft behind closed doors (cam belt cover) to keep the cams/valve train in perfect synchronisation with the crankshaft so the the engine does all it's stuff properly.
there is nothing special about the B6 - BP engine, it's exactly the same as any other internal combustion engine, they are all SSBB configuration, the glaring exception is the rotary which has no valve train.
in answer to your question, I'd ask a Mazda dealer (or ford), I'm sure there are plenty of other models that ran the 1.8 BP sans aircon, just a matter of finding one the right length

yeah the two belts you see are the same, but as the others have said neither are called timing belts. you'll have to start pulling your engine apart if you want to have a look at that one

I've never seen an NB in Australia without air con.
Anyway, see the attached diagram. It shows the part numbers for a USA market NB but should be similar for the Australian market. Check with a Mazda dealer.

wow i feel like a blonde

i really should of known that, just had a look at the drive pully and saw the 2 belts. i was hoping to get a gates timing belt, i wonder if gates make a drive belt also (iirc moss motors states they do for the na, this is probably why i got confused)
