Have you checked the tension on the alternator/power steering belts? That'd be where I'd start first.

It could also possibly be your thrust bearing...

My money is on the alternator belt. You just need to loosen the locking bolt, turn the adjusting bolt a few turns to put a bit more tension on the belt and then retighten the locking bolt. Should take all of about 5 minutes. From memory you'll only need a 12mm spanner to do it and no need to get under the car. If it is the belt the longer you leave it the worse it gets as it will eventually polish the belt and it wont be able to transmit the power. The only way to fix it then is to replace the belt which is a lot more complex than tightening it up.

that doesn't sound right... i'm guessing you had the A/C on? there's a delay on the A/C after ignition.
