This was talked about at the end of the "NC MPS officially canned" thread so here is the scanned article from Road&Ster magazine.
It was NOPRO that did it and it is in Japanese.
Looks like they had to shave something off the block to fit but its in there
Imagine a 2.3 NC with forged internals and any of the GT28 turbos
Or a 2.3 NC with quad throttle bodies with 12.1 CR!
OMG I need to to go to the loo .....
Enjoy!

NOPRO 2.3L & 2.5L Conversions
Latest update & thread revival!
Some of you already know that NOPRO did a L3-VE 2.3 litre conversion two years ago.
Now they have gone one step further and put in the L5-VE 2.5 litre!
Here is the translated BLOG update courtesy of REV9 Autosport: http://www.rev9autosport.com/blog/results-are-in/

Great news for NCEC owners, NOPRO has dyno tuned their latest modification (MZR 2.5L swap) and the results are in!
Results are:
224.6 PS (221 HP)
28.5 KGM (206 LB/FT)
I am really impressed by the power it's producing, very nice for someone looking for a naturally aspirated setup or just for some more displacement!
A little info on the L5-VE:Wikipedia wrote:The 2.5L L5-VE is an updated, bored and stroked version of the L3-VE 2.3L. The 2.5L (2488 cc) L5 engine has an 89.0 mm (3.50 in) bore and a 100.0 mm (3.94 in) stroke, with a compression ratio of 9.7:1. The crankshaft is now forged-steel and dual-counterweighted just as the L3-VDT Mazdaspeed DISI 2.3L (Les' Note: same engine as in the Mazda 3/6 MPS & CX-7). To increase strength and durability of the bore, a new steel-molybdenum alloy is used for the cast-in cylinder liners. This offers greatly enhanced high-heat, high-pressure tolerance as well as reduced friction. The increased stroke of 100 mm, up from 94 mm of the L3, allows a higher final-drive ratio resulting in lower-RPM while cruising to increase fuel economy. It produces 170 bhp (127 kW; 172 PS) at 6000 rpm (168 bhp in PZEV trim) and 167 lb·ft (226 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm (166 ft·lbf in PZEV trim).

Great update Les!
NOPRO really are the champions of the NC in Japan.
I have a contact over there who knows the workshop, and a few other articles in Road&Ster - will add into this thread when I get some time.
