Aftermarket ECU's?

As far as aftermarket ECU's for an NA go, is something like a Haltech Interceptor (of which I already have) OK to use or do you have to use something like a stand alone?
If it helps, Cams, quads and a better fuel pump are what I'll have.
Any help appreciated.

With standalone, often it's not realised that there are secondary devices that need to be controlled.
Things like aircon clutch, air con fan, tacho, alternator, vris, BAC/IAC take up more than their fair share of outputs that the majority of ECU's provide.
Piggy back is easier.
For a standalone, generally leave the stock ecu in and let it go into limp mode (controlling AC and tacho etc) while the standalone is controlling ign and fuel etc.
The aircon, tacho etc don't care if the stock ECU is in limp. If you have a CEL just pull the globe

You'll struggle to run that list of mods with a stock/piggyback.
You'll need to ditch your air flow metre to run quads = cant use anything working with the stock ECU.
Best option for quads would be to run an ECU using TPS as the main source of fuel correction, generally a MAP sensed configuartion will have troupl getting a good MAP reading from a Quad setup.

Thanks for your help on this lads. I've decided to keep my MPS so the interceptor will stay in the 6 for now.
The motor (with the quads) was running with, and comes with an HKS F-Con ECU (which I know nothing about) so hopefully that will suffice for now. If not the Megasquirt looks pretty good.

I had a stand alone Wold 3D on my NA when it was turbo, and as great it was for making power, tuning it for cold start and the A/C was an absolute pig, and in the end was one of the reasons why I upgraded to an SE

Most GOOD ECU can control al these things, It Comes down to the Programer/tuner to set it all up to work .
I now I have done 4 MX5 (one of them an SE)
and they all work like factory except they make more POWER )
and everything works
You just Have to Shop Around (and if youcan take a 5with the same system for a Drive)
Stand along is the Best (if done right )
I know I have a Stand alone in a NA8

True Russel?
The top-o-line Motec is claimed to have more analog outs than any other with 8 + spare injector and ignition outs.
By the time you throw on a few more injectors and coils there isn't much left for things like BAC/IAC, boost noid (if applicable), N2O noid (if applicable), cooling fan, AC fan, alternator control, vris (NB+), shift lights and AC (1 for clutch, 1 for pressure switch). An alternative is to go for a CAN expansion bus, but thats big $$$$
Your car is obviously of standard configuration.
Take care

The Wolf V500 works fine on Simon's SE (217rwkw) and I have had my Autronic SMC for ages now ... think it's like almost 8 years.... wow only just realised that
Anyway, I fully agree with Russellb regarding that it's probably more important to get a tuner that has experience with your model MX5 and getting him/her to choose the EMS and give you backup/support for the product.
If they recommend and have actually had success with the same model MX5 then I would go with them.

Has anyone in Melbourne had experience with tuning a Mega Squirt ECU?
Would love to hear who, how much, etc

I'm using am Adaptronic e420c and very happy with the product and after sales support. You can download the tuning software (WARI) from the website
http://www.adaptronic.com.au/downloads.php for free, also there is ECU config. files to adapt to you car. MX5mania sell them (also dyno tunes) and the forum (
http://www.adaptronic.com.au/forum/)is very helpfull and quick.

There's a couple of guys in the Vic club who would be able to help you a lot with the Megasquirt.
I think some of the 323 TX3 owners are jumping on board too, so you might even find a dyno opperator/tuner who knows what one is.

Cheers Hotrod, that company is not far from work, I'll swing by and ask some questions.
Okibi, I'll see if I can't catch up with an owner or 2 here in Vic and pick their brains, thanks.
