Appologies if this has been discussed before, but a search for \"hks turbo kit\" didnt give me any useful threads.


Had a drive of a 300rwkw Aristo tonight, and rode passenger in an EVO1 for the rest of the night, now I've got the power bug again.

I thought I'd gotten rid of it when I swapped my Skyline for the MX5, but it appears to have returned.

Looking at getting this HKS kit but I want to see if anyone else has used it, what its like, how good the fuel control is etc. I'd probably add a front mount to it, other than that I guess I'd just like to run it like it is out of the box.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

It is about 10% better than a Greddy kit.
The only thing better is the manifold (not the one pictured) as it will be less crack prone.

The fuel control device is an Fcon mini. It is a fixed fueling device, it will only do the fuel available for standard boost levels, that is with a standard exhaust... A 2.5 inch exhaust will flow more than what that device can fuel

Unless you have an ECU to adjust your timing (or an appropriate timing adjustment device), the HKS kit in its basic form will feel crap as you have to adjust the timing to about 6 degrees to avoid detonation (and only just)...

The downpipe is very restrictive (i bought mine with a replaced d/p already) but it is tough and will only crack if abused (seen a Honda one crack, but it had bad engine mounts with huge flex)...

The turbo is tiny and lag is almost non existent. Boosts well to 10 pounds, but I would not push it past that (intake temps go nuts after that)....

The oil drain is a novel way to get around drilling your oil pan (it is teed into your dipstick tube)... It is adequate for the T2 turbo supplied in the kit (same turbo as the twin turbo VG30 Nissan 300ZX, you can get gaskets and rebuild kits from Nissan)...

IMO unless you get it veeeeeeeeeeery cheap (read Greddy or cheaper... I would not look at Greddy kits anyways with such good alternatives about)
an AVO or Begi S will be a better investment.

Mine's been changed from original with a FMIC, T25 inducer, Stainless 2.5 inch downpipe, fueling by Megasquirt (AFM deleted) and it's lowest boost sits around 8 pounds (EBC by MS)...

I would say the cost of the mods done to the kit would be far in excess to purchasing a more expensive option...

But boost (when done properly) really wakes up an Mx5

i don't know bout their quality, but JustJDM a site sponsor of ozmazda.com are selling a HKS turbo kit for MX-5s. members price of $3199 instead of rrp $3799. i gather you'd try to get a used kit though?

i know what you men about the turbo bug. i've developed bit of an appetite for it too a non FI MX-5 just feels slow to me now....

SMK, the HKS kit can be landed for about $2500.

Looking at a BEGi kit now after advice from some of the americans, it seems that if you get one of their full kits it comes with a CARB certificate, now I just need to find out if something thats legal in California re emissions would be acceptable here (which I imagine it would since their standards are higher in California). If it's not, then the standard kit plus some of the upgrades would appear to be the best path

This is the HKS kit on my race car...have just fitted FMIC....I am really happy with it...just runs the F-con...runs a pretty stock exhaust as AMPZ said the F-con is very limited and I don't want to have to do any more with the ECU at the moment...

The car came from japan with this set up.

I don't think it is a huge power increase but it is enough for me to embarrass some very fast and expensive cars on the race track.
