Timing with Cams?

Hi all

I installed a set of HKS camshaft from a forum member just recently, the duration are 264 and 8.73mm lift for both sides running stock cam gears. Those with similar setup or had previous experience, what engine timing should I set? Currently set to 10 degrees which is stock, would there be any benefit in advancing timing to say 14 degree? any negative affects? Also are cam gears necessary? what improvement will they offer?

Thanks all

Cheers
Minh

I read somewhere that a good starting point IF you want play around with cam timing is 2degrees advanced on intake side, and 1 degree retarded exhaust. (or other way round  )
Cant find the link again, but it was probably on one of the US forums.

Who was the guy that did the \"DIY exposed Cam Gears\"? Stantheman?

The cam timing should be pretty good as is, otherwise they wouldnt have made them that way. When I first put mine in I just ran 10deg btdc on the ignition timing, or at least as close as could possibly get it with a lumpy idle.

Only tip I have is drive the hell out of it and keep your foot flat while it pulls right trhough to the limiter  :D

QFT.

The whole ignition timing map ideally needs retuning to suit the new VE map.

thanks everyone.

These HKS runs on stock cams gear, so far seems to drive quite nicely at stock settings. I advanced ign timing to 14degrees last night and today on the way to work feels like the engine is working slightly harder, there's a faint but noticable engine sound that I haven't notice in the past, it's not pinging, more to do with either strong blow by some something. I'll get it back to 10degrees again and see how it feels.

I'm on the verge of going for MegaSquirt, as I too feel this would be the way to get the most out the cams.

So general rule of thumb with cams is more advance at low RPM and opposite way as RPM climbs?.
