Chipping the NC - Did they ever work out remapping the VVT?

Now that I've done Wakefield stock, I'm researching a chip and dyno tune. Apologies if this has already been covered.
Has anyone had a good outcome re-chipping their NC? Cost? Brand? Outcome? Pitfalls?
I'm really keen to have one that can work the bejesus out of the VVT, as I think that's where the smarts really are. But that can be scary, too. Don't want to mess that gear up.
I have a CAI to fit yet, and want to feel that difference before going the chip. Way back when I was around last, the SP guys had just worked out how to remap the VVT?
Tell me your story...
